Ore. faith-healing father gets 60 days in jail

An Oregon City man convicted of criminal mistreatment in the faith-healing death of his 15-month-old daughter has been sentenced to 60 days in jail and five years probation.
OREGON CITY, Ore. —

An Oregon City man convicted of criminal mistreatment in the faith-healing death of his 15-month-old daughter has been sentenced to 60 days in jail and five years probation.

Judge Steven Maurer said Friday that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and the duty of society to protect the health and welfare of children. The father, 29-year-old Carl Brent Worthington, could have been sentenced to up to a year in jail.

As a special condition of probation, the judge ordered Worthington to choose a pediatrician to provide regular care for his 5-year-old daughter and for the child he and his wife are expecting soon. The jury acquitted her of charges in the girl's death.

The prosecution said Ava Worthington failed to flourish through most of her life because of a cyst on her neck that impeded her breathing and eating, contributing to her fatal pneumonia. She died on a Sunday evening after family and church members prayed over her and anointed her with olive oil.

The state medical examiner said she could easily have been saved with antibiotics.

1. Not Nearly Enough, Ma'am
And the pastor of the church should be in the cells as well, if not laid out in the ground....

2. This case was in The Oregonian every day for a while.
It seemed like every day there was also at least one LTTE about it, and almost all were critical of the Worthingtons and this church.

I am disappointed that the jury went so easy on the parents. These parents already had a baby boy who died, and the church has a graveyard full of children who never got the medical attention they needed.

5. I believe they only have one left...the fetus that the mother is carrying.
Their baby boy already died, and then their little girl.

7. The story mentions a daughter (5) and the one they're expecting

You know, I wonder...

If he'd believed Xenu or the Flying Spaghetti Monster or little green aliens would come down and heal his sick daughter, would he have gotten 60 days?

Fuck no.

He'd either get 20 years in prison, or a lifetime in some state mental hospital.

But because he believed JEEBUS would come save her, he gets a slap on the wrist.

6. The sentence is just and fair.
Judge Maurer should be commended.

Blood lust for Mr. Worthington would only hurt his surviving children more.

"As a special condition of probation, the judge ordered Worthington to choose a pediatrician to provide regular care for his 5-year-old daughter and for the child he and his wife are expecting soon. The jury acquitted her of charges in the girl's death."

Ironic and well-suited to the circumstances.

10. You may disagree, of course.
However, I didn't suggest a party.

This is a very sad thing all around.

9. Allopathic medical treatment might have been the way to go as opposed
to the olive oil and prayer circle intervention.

Some kinds of delusional ignorance have unbearable costs.

12. And the death of a child who might have been easily saved by run-of-the-
mill medical practice does seem to be a tremendous cross to bear over the course of a lifetime.

I wouldn't want to carry that heavy a burden myself.

16. I wonder if the guy will even feel responsible
After all, HE thinks he did the right thing, 'cause it's in the BAYBULL, and now the rational world is just giving him a 60-day "time out" rather than actually punishing him.

After all, JESUS failed, not him.

17. The child's death definitely kicks things to a new level.
The way it must have been laid out in his head was one thing, and what actually went down looks like quite another.

I guess there are other young folks in this family. I hope the take note of the old man's recalcitrance and hop the next bus to New York.
