On one hand (obviously I have a huge political bias, otherwise I wouldn't be posting here on DU) there are working class people who take pride in how despite setbacks they try to be good people, parents and providers, and who realize all the benefits that others have given them. People who take pride in the benefits they get from their union, their community and as a result feel a need to give back.
But working class pride also makes the working class fodder for fascism and plutocracy (fascism is usually supported by the military, working class and industrial class, groups which on the surface should be at odds). You prey on people who work hard by saying 'they' (whoever they may be, just as long as 'they' are different somehow. mexicans, blacks, liberals, jews, catholics, communists, etc) want to punish you or control you, and 'they' are not as hard working, patriotic or devoted as you. You sow divisions between the 'real' citizens and the 'fake' citizens while stoking resentment and anger in the 'real' citizens by pointing out how destructive, lazy, freeloading and different 'they' are. Then the wealthy use those divisions to divide and conquer long enough to loot the store. If the military can be used to oppress any sort of resistance, all the better. It is not a coincidence that fascist countries not only go after political opponents, they also destroy trade unions.
So the working class can go either way. They can be the backbone of reforms to help the working class, or they can be pawns of the wealthy. I have seen them do both in my life, and I'm fairly young.
