Congresscritter who has dropped his Congressional health care as a protest.
I'm working on putting together facts about health care reform.

I remember hearing about a congress person who gave up his (Yes, I'm pretty sure it was a man) congressional health care coverage until all USians have the right to have the same health care.

Help! Does anyone remember his name?

TIA!!!

3. Thank you.... I searched his name, and am not finding info on this.
I'm frustrated, because I know I heard about this!

Anyone with info, it would be very much appreciated!

5. Oh, good!
A good friend of mine lives in Ohio, and I was pretty sure he'd mentioned that Sherrod had done that!

I'm glad you were able to find verification...

:hi:

6. A wonderful librarian came up with the right search words! Hurrah for librarians!
Should anyone want the article, here it is:

It's a negative letter, but it does state the real reason:

Sherrod Brown declines congressional health plan
Posted by Wendy Leatherberry, Cleveland Heights July 22, 2009 04:10AM
Categories: Letters
I was appalled to read Bruce Batista's letter to the editor Tuesday containing information that Plain Dealer editors surely know is false, even if Mr. Batista may not.

While it is true that Sen. Sherrod Brown supports health care reform legislation that includes a public plan option, he does not take the excellent health plan available to him. Rather, he promised as a candidate for the House of Representatives in 1992 that he would not take the health insurance offered to members of Congress until every American had access to quality health coverage.

So, instead of taking a benefit to which he is entitled, he has, at his own expense, bought health insurance. For the past few years, that coverage is purchased through his wife's union at The Plain Dealer. Since it is frequently noted at the end of Connie Schultz's columns that the two are married, surely the letters editor should have been aware that Brown does what so many spouses in our country do today: He purchases his health insurance through his wife's employer.

While there is much that is debatable about health care reform, and people may certainly disagree with his position, Sherrod Brown has been consistent in seeking health care reform that includes the choice of accessible, affordable, quality coverage for all Americans.

I'm glad to know the denvoid post did an expose' on the damned talking points!

My big problem is that I'm determined to keep this to two pages, so that I won't give up my breakfast money to print it, and that people will read it.

I've saved your articles, and am mucho appreciado!

9. You're very welcome!
I would love to see Americans have healthcare where they do not have to choose between food or medicine, mortgage payment or Doctors' bills and it is great to see so many fighting the lies put out by HMOs and Insurance companies!

such havoc when, imo, they should get to have their 'say' and that's it, everyone moves on gets IT done. Living in a country with a Parliamentary system we don't have this happen except when we have a minority government which, coincidentally, we have right now (thank goodness seeing as it is a blush-lover Con government).

Edited to add: Thanks for the link, the author of the article has an EXCELLENT point re the reps of 4% of the US population trying to force 96% to accept THEIR version of healthcare which is keep the corps happy.

12. I guess I'm missing something here
Is this just a symbolic thing for him? I mean after all, all he's changing is to whom he's paying the premiums...it's not like he gave up free health care and is paying out of his pocket.

15. It's to make a point.
There was a candidate in the last presidential race who said that he would notify congress that he expected a comprehensive health bill by July, and if they didn't comply, he would do all he could to take away their gold-plated health care.

Symbolic?

Maybe.... but it hits to the point, don't you think?

They work for US.

THEY have good health care.

We don't.

Seems to all add up to me.

16. Sorry
But it makes no point to me. For all I know, the health plan he has now is better than the one he could get through his government offerings. Gold plated? Not.

20. That could very well be the case...
But his point is that he's eligible for health insurance through the US Gov't., and he chose not to take it.

That's the point.
