Jesus hearing aid
One my hearing aids has been malfunctioning lately. I put it away in its little felt-lined tomb a few days ago. This morning, on the third day, I tried it again, and lo! it is risen! It works again.

Well, you’d need a rest, too, if you spent all day in some guy’s ear canal.

1. I swear, I think those things have minds of their own sometimes,
like cars and computers. Mine have been driving me crazy lately. I'm in my forties and have worn aids since I was 21. The pair I have now are over six years old, so they're starting to wear out. The one for my right ear has started working only when it feels like it, and it'll go off and on, sounding like a bad speaker connection when it does that. It certainly makes things interesting at times. This pair will have to do for awhile, though, since we just don't have the money right now for another pair. The cheapest would be several thousand dollars. So, I'll just have to make do with them until they stop completely. I believe in doing that with most things, anyway, using them until they're used up instead of just going out and getting a new one all the time.

The next pair I get, though, WILL be digital this time, the kind that can filter out background noise. The ones I have now don't do that and it's very hard to use them in public places such as restaurants, parties, concerts, public gatherings, etc., etc. In those cases, it just becomes all one jumbled symphony of noise.

2. The ones I have are digital, and they're great
Except when they don't work. The one on the left works intermittently, as I described. The one on the right is newer and works consistently, but sometimes it kicks into overdrive and gets too loud, as though it's lost its programming.

I'm unemployed, so I'll have to wait before I replace either or both. When I do, I'll go to Costco.

4. Yes!
Not every Costco location. Their Web site tells which ones have that service.

Licensed audiologist on site and a pretty good selection of hearing aids.

5. Wow, I had no idea. Problem is, being in a very rural area of
a rural state, I don't think there are any Costcos anywhere near here. I'll have to check and see what I can find.

6. Depending on the distance you'd have to drive
it might still be worth it. I don't know how the prices at Costco compare to those elsewhere for similar quality hearing aids, but it's bound to be a pretty good savings.

8. Sorry to "hear" that (sorry, couldn't resist it!)
I know first-hand how difficult it is to be able to afford the damned things. It doesn't help at all that most insurance usually doesn't cover one dime of the cost. And they're not like glasses, which are usually under a couple hundred, often even less. The aids all have to be specially, individually made, customized to each person.
