Commentary regarding Surgeon General nominee Regina Benjamin's physique
Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 05:08 PM by devilgrrl
Society’s obsession with the slim set
Lisa Earle McLeod

Are you too fat for your job? There’s been some debate in the media about whether or not surgeon general nominee Regina Benjamin is too overweight for the position. On behalf of chubby, middle-aged, smart women, I feel obligated to take up this cause.

Please tell me, which jobs do you need to be skinny for? And when is it OK to bring a little extra padding into the office?

I think Dr. Benjamin looks fine. Sure, she’s no Kate Moss, but C. Everett Koop was no Slim Jim either.

<snip>

However, some have suggested that as the face of medicine, Dr. Benjamin’s Rubenesque figure doesn’t project the right image.

Uh, have you looked around the mall lately?

TV anchor desks may be staffed by skinny minnies who live on Dentyne and Starbucks, but the rest of us look more like the rounded Doc from the Bayou.

But apparently a high IQ isn’t enough these days. If you want a top job, the number that really counts is your waist to hip ratio. We can now add surgeon general to the list of professions that require a low BMI: fashion models, mannequins, featherweight boxers, porn stars and now presidential nominees.

Perhaps the people bringing up the issue of Dr. Benjamin’s size are doing it for political reasons, and it’s really her potential policies that they dislike.

I've always liked this old pic..

Notice the "physiques" for the girls.. These are healthy, active young women. they would be considered "chubby" today :(

Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 06:28 PM by rocktivity
that they're having with Sotomayors "wisdom" and Obama's birth certificate. Their REAL problem is that Benjamin IS NOT A WHITE MALE!

4. Judging people based on their appearances is fascist.
Guess it's a sign of the times when a person's value is based on what they look like.

I know, there's more to it than that: It also matters how much they own.

8. Hear Hear for unbelievable shallowness.

Just the discussion of this subject totally ticks me off.

One can't get away from some sort of judgment. Skinny girls, fat girls, lesbians, gays. Ugh!!!

Until we stop pointing these things out they will be paid attention to. I'm ashamed I'm even posting on this thread.

Ever hear the term "Beat a dead horse"? Just don't pay attention to the idiots and move on, they like the attention.

9. Just when you thought the BS made-up "controversies" couldn't get any damned stupider
Edited on Sun Aug-02-09 12:47 AM by Number23
This woman is a doctor committed to saving people's lives. Who the HELL cares that she isn't a size 4? What grown ass woman who knows what the hell is up in the world wants to be anyway???

Damn, I get so sick of this sh*t! A man can look as if he just got smacked upside the head with a bag of hammers and NO ONE says a WORD. But unless a woman looks like goddamned Naomi Campbell, apparently she's not "fit" for a job or there's some "concern"! The people bitching over this stupidity need to GROW UP.

ETA: Kicked and rec'd. I get SO SICK of this stupidity and I'm damn cute and fine!

11. Not sure the republicans are the best at hiring doctors
"The doctor who used to regularly vouch for Vice-President Dick Cheney's good health was himself struggling at the time to overcome an addiction to prescription drugs.

Dr Gary Malakoff, of the George Washington University Medical Centre in Washington, has now been dropped from Cheney's medical team.

According to the New Yorker magazine he had treated Cheney, who has a history of heart problems, since 1995.

However, sealed divorce papers obtained by the magazine showed that Malakoff spent about US$46,000 ($70,000) on internet purchases of a narcotic nasal spray between mid-1999 and December 2001 - by which time Cheney had already been serving as Vice-President for almost a year."

12. Yeah I took up this cause on another site
The idiots had simply repackaged FAUX NeWS stuff. The site was www.runnerworld.com which often has "let's openly discriminate against fat people" threads.

They aren't creative enough or intelligent enough to make arguments themselves. It was pretty annoying but I did manage to pin a couple of poster down for out right "hate" and discrimination toward fat people. And they consider anyone who is slightly chubby "fat". These skinny holier than thou runners are stupid assholes.

I do want to say that not all people on the site or all runners have this discriminatory attitude.
