UK Ambassador: We’ll be in Afghanistan ‘For Decades’
Source: The Raw Story

Foreign forces will be engaged in Afghanistan “for decades,” says the UK’s ambassador to the United States.

Sir Nigel Sheinwald, the UK Foreign Office’s representative in Washington, told the Boston Globe Friday: “We’re going to have a very long-term commitment to Afghanistan’s future. … This is not just one year; this is going to be for decades. We’re going to help them get to a state which they can ward off the return of the Taliban and Al Qaeda. That’s our strategic objective.”

Sheinwald’s prognosis for the situation in Afghanistan came as a parliamentary committee in his home country released a report that is harshly critical of the efforts made in Afghanistan thus far, particularly those of the UK, whose military force is the second-largest in the Afghanistan campaign.

The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee said without a clear strategy stabilizing Afghanistan had become “considerably more difficult than might otherwise have been the case.”

Lawmakers criticized US policies in Afghanistan and Pakistan and warned the “considerable cultural insensitivity” of some coalition troops had caused serious damage to Afghans’ perceptions that will be “difficult to undo”.

1. Kick!
I will keep kicking this for those who still believe the war in Afghanistan is the 'good war'. I will keep kicking this for those who didn't believe that we would be there for decades, when I said it last year.

9. What, exactly, is the job?
We are creating generations of terrorists who hate America. We are killing thousands of civilians a year. We are losing hundreds of soldiers, and handing billions(probably trillions)of dollars to war profiteers. What is left to be done that makes that worth it?

8. Afghan war troop deaths surged in July
By Laura King
August 1, 2009
Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan -- The month began with a fatal roadside bombing and ended with word that an American had died of wounds suffered in a firefight. After nearly eight years of warfare in Afghanistan, July proved by far the deadliest month yet for U.S. troops and their foreign allies.

Bombs and rocket attacks, ambushes and aviation accidents killed many of the 72 foreign troops, including 43 Americans, according to data at the website icasualties.org. Previously, the highest monthly U.S. toll was 28 in June 2008, according to the independent website.

10. August will be worse.
With the elections on the 20th, violence will continue to go up. With the US escalating with even more troops, violence will go up. The hopes of ever getting out seem farther away everyday.
