If, several years ago, I had written a satirical, Terry Southern-style novel about the ways in which racist far-right-wingers might respond to the first black President of the United States, I’d like to at least imagine that I could have predicted their obsession with whether or not he is a “real” American, i.e. the birth certificate silliness, not to mention their developing obsession with his penis.

The internet has transformed society very quickly. One of the lesser-noted changes has been the growing understanding that when you scratch the surface, most people are out of their fucking minds.

things like high school sports and American Idol for most of their entire lives.

And now they are suddenly making determinations about things such as Economic theories, Evolution, Theology, Semantics, Sociology, and an History of the U.S. with which they are just barely even acquainted, let alone knowledgeable on any kind of detailed level.

They are totally, completely, 100 per cent out of their minds.

On the other hand, it's kind of nice, isn't it. They have to stretch to such absurd lengths to find something to criticize. They're even criticizing how much he's getting done. A R-W talking point right now is to "slow down!"

I have seen the lousy cartoons from this egotist for the last decade. The message is clear: we are all idiots or dupes, and only Tom Tomorrow knows what is right for the world. No elected leader, no activist, nobody but Tom Tomorrow had a clue.

This guy is going the way of cartoonist Al Capp, who you may remember was also the only man who was right. While Tomorrow talks from a libertarian/egotist platform, Capp was a right-winger. Capp was disgraced and died in ignominy when the public found out he was molesting college girls a third of his age. His "Li'l Abner" strip is nearly forgotten today. And I believe "This Modern World" will be going the same way when we find the truth about Tomorrow.

In 1971, syndicated columnists Jack Anderson and Brit Hume published an article alleging instances of sexual harassment by Al Capp of students on his lecture tour.<18> Capp soon became involved in a scandal after allegedly propositioning a married student from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Capp’s Eau Claire hotel room. After being charged in the incident, Capp pleaded nolo contendere to "attempted adultery” (Adultery was, and as of 2008 still is considered a felony in Wisconsin) and was fined $500.


personally, i think it's wrong to destroy someone's livelihood over a "proposition". i'm a woman quite capable of fending off propositions (not that i get many these days) from cartoonists on lecture tours who have no influence over my studies or job.

what was the innocent little student doing in capp's hotel room in the first place? possibly she was sent there in order to be propositioned.

It showed how Capp went from being a Roosevelt liberal to a right-wing psycho, equivalent to Bill O'Reilly, who went on college campuses and insulted everyone to the left of Louis XIV. I remember the radio editorials he used to do for campus radio, and in 1971 when his scandal broke, the local campus station celebrated his fall.

This may not seem terribly honorable to you, Hannah Bell, but you can't attack right wingers on their beliefs. You have to show them to be hypocrites and betrayers of their espoused beliefs. That was how Al Capp was brought down. And although I don't know much about the egotistical and self-centered Tom Tomorrow, I hope he will be brought down the same way.

(My biggest complaint about him IS his egotism. He attacks Obama, Bush, everybody that isn't Tom Tomorrow. He's the cartoonist equivalent of the New York Whore Times's Maureen Dowd; he hates EVERYBODY.)

you obviously have some sort of personal axe to grind. it makes you seem a bit of a nutter to tell you the truth.

And the point is, his strip is ironic, and angry, but not very enlightening.

He rises my gorge more than any other cartoonist. More than Ted Rall, who still can't draw a George Bush caricature to save his life, and has not yet drawn President Obama in a recognizable form.

More than Scott Adams, whose Dilbert cartoons are a paen to the misery of the workplace, a worshipping of the powerlessness of the cubicle mice - even as they are getting kicked to the curb and outsourced to India.

You want to see a good cartoonist? Check out Keith Knight and his "K Chronicles." He's also a funny guy in person and one hell of a dedicated, intelligent progressive. But of course, he wouldn't be considered for the honor because he is "the other black cartoonist" (the main one is, of course, Aaron McGruder.)

besides which, he had lots of good works to his credit which, to me at least, far outweigh the fact that he made passes at coeds.

He was an ordinary flawed human being, why don't you spend your time destroying the reputation of people who actually deserve it.

There seems to be something stuck in your eye. Oh, yes, you're wearing blinders and you can't see that Tom Tomorrow is not a liberal. He is an egotist. He thinks all of us are fools because we don't slavishly follow the dictates of that paragon of intelligence, Tom Tomorrow. And attack whoever Tom Tomorrow disapproves of at the moment, whether it's Obama, McCain, or his usual target, everybody in the human race who isn't Tom Tomorrow.

I don't get your point. Tom Tomorrow seems more like a weekly summary of right wing stupidity. To me, he's just pointing out the obvious and poking a finger in the eye of those who don't get it. :shrug:

Your grudge against him is baffling. Did you have a negative personal encounter with him in the past?

You get out of it what you bring into it. Lots of people don't see it the way you do. I think your take on him says more about you than it does him.



If you read political cartoonists they all think they are right TT is no different than the rest of them.


And what Al Capp who IMHO is about a zit on Wattersons ass has to do with any of this is beyond me.
