College Grad Can't Find Job, Wants $$$ Back

"Thompson, a graduate of Monroe College, is suing her school for the $70,000 she spent on tuition because she hasn't found solid employment since receiving her bachelor's degree "

I love it when someone who has ZERO work history thinks getting in to massive debt to get a paper is going go guarantee them a job that even begins to let them service that debt, let alone pay the bills.

1. the system is broken
But suing your college because you can't get a job is not the way to fix it.

2. A college degree has NEVER guaranteed you a job
It only makes is POSSIBLE to get a BETTER one. That hasn't changed since I finished college!

is like going to the library to get firewood.

6. Thing is
there are parents/counselors who tell kids to go to school (college), work hard and get good grades so they can get a good (white collar) job. World's worst career advice. But it happens. Odds are some such crap shaped this kids expectations.

Personal connections and skills will get you farther than credentials ever will. Yet we have this terribly misguided idea that a good education is required for career success. Bullshit. One can be "educated" in the sense of being well read and having the ability to think critically without earning an educational credential. Likewise one can have skills without having a credential.

7. i hate to see what she would have done if she got an advanced degree
and still had lifelong un/under-employment problems like me...

and while this is a silly and futile gesture, it does highlight how flawed the system is, especially for those who have to take out 20 years' worth of student loans only beg, hustle and plead just for a no-security, low-wage, cubicle-slave job...

14. You, too?
those who have to take out 20 years' worth of student loans only beg, hustle and plead just for a no-security, low-wage, cubicle-slave job...

I look around at colleagues with similar degrees who "made it" and see I'm making one-half to one-third what they are making. It's painful, but I realize I took an chance and failed. I at least have a "no-security, low-wage, cubicle-slave job" (not in my field of study), that others don't. It (barely) pays the mortgage, food, utilities, and insurance, but I do have a little left over at the end of the month for vodka. That and a little vermouth, an olive, and a cocktail glass and I feel like I'm living the good life...

20. yeah,
my field (journalism -- believe it or not i got a master's from KU) kinda fell apart, and i'm trying to work my way into the lucrative PR hustle with little luck...I'm still (perhaps foolishly) holding out hope for a big payday...

of course the irony of ironies is my best friend is a high-school dropout who has done nothing but service and blue-collar work his whole life and he can buy and sell me...recently bought a house, and that was when the values were still sky-high...

8. This just proves that education isn't what it once was.
More failings of our society.

12. Correlation does not equal causation
Let's look at some facts -

Finding a job right now is difficult for people with great resumes and multiple industry certifications. I have 2 degrees and 4 industry certifications (IT Networking) and would have trouble getting a job in my field.

She is 27, living at home and just finished college (for an undergrad that is late to graduate) - we do not know HOW she performed in school coupled with the fact that this is NOT a well known school (should not matter, but it does)

She graduated in April and sued in July - that may indicate some issues with the person in question - I mean, who feels entitled to employment within 2 months of graduation - especially in this economy?

This story is MUCH more that an indictment of the educational system - but don't let facts get in the way of throwing stones...

9. Get in line!
Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 10:10 AM by KansDem
On edit: It appears she's suing not because of the quality of education but rather for the lack of assistance she perceives she's received from her alma mater.

The 27-year-old information-technology student accuses the school's Office of Career Advancement for not living up to its end of the deal and offering her the leads and employment advice it promised, according to The New York Post.

Schools need to be careful about this. I received no such assistance from my school as it didn't offer any. But I knew that going into my graduate-degree program(s). I just assumed, like any other school, that once they received my final tuition check, it was "adios" and good luck...

18. A lot of these schools advertise (almost) guaranteed placement...
I'm sure it's toned down in the last year or so, but lots of more "business" oriented schools practically guarantee job placement in their advertising.

Maybe she should sue for false advertising?

13. It doesn't look like she got much..
knowledge, that is. Many people also don't realize that a college degree is NOT a guarantee of intelligence.
The company I worked for passed me over several times for not finishing my degree, so they hired 'real' engineers with degrees.
The engineers would work up a project, drawings and specs only to have them fail. Then I would have to fix the problems, many times starting over from the beginning and totally discarding what they had designed.

The fact is, I had taken several physics and engineering courses, but when the first gas crunch hit(1974?), I could no longer afford to finish school. Now, I live too far away from any school, making too little $ to go back.

Just hoping my kids have better luck..

15. That's not what education is about
You don't buy a job by getting an education.

You get to LEARN stuff. And no one can ever take it away from you. It is lots more valuable than a job that you can lose any old day.

The attitude about education is messed up.

It'll probably be even harder for her to find a job after this mess.
