"Cash for Clunkers" has been an overwhelming success.. so, of course, GOP senators try to kill it

Auto sales went through the roof over the past few weeks as the "Cash for Clunkers" program kicked in.

A struggling segment of the economy got a much-needed boost of adrenalin. Ford stock is up 10% this morning.

So... Jim Demint and other GOP senators are trying to kill the program. Why?

Because... as Jim Demint said a few weeks ago.... it's all about "breaking Obama".

The GOP mantra: If the program works and it has Obama's name on it, it must be destroyed.

They're no longer just "wishing for Obama to fail", they're working hard to make sure they stomp out any burgeoning successes.

This is what Rick Santorum and other Republicans tried to do with Clinton's wildly successful "AmeriCorps" project.

The GOP preaches that Govt can't do anything right. It is their core belief. Therefore, any time the evidence is clear that the Govt *IS* doing something extremely successfully, they work to stomp it out before too many people see it.

We mustn't let them succeed. "Cash for Clunkers" is working.... even better than the wildest dreams of its proponents. It's getting the automobile industry back on its feet AND helping the environment. The consummate win-win. And at a relatively inexpensive cost (as govt spending goes) of $3 to $4 billion.

Why? "Cash for Clunkers".

Obama and Democrats... DIRECTLY and VERIFIABLY fixing the economy. One bit at a time.

benefiting the foreign car makers such as Toyota, Nissan, etc. And that it's going to drive the cost of used cars up since they are made to destroy the cars traded in through the program. He was fussing about dealers not being able to sell those cars or break them down for parts, etc.

He spouted off about that right before going on and on about buying more ammo. Typical of him. He can turn anything around to justify his way of thinking about something. DBA's - can't work with them, can't work without them!

IMO, noise reduction headphones are a gift from GOD!!!

7. Then all the more reason for the Southern Republicans to support it
Nissan in Mississippi, Honda in Kentucky (?), Mercedes-Benz in Alabama, BMW in South Carolina.

5. Will this need 50 or 60 votes? If it needs 60, I don't see it happening.
I need to decide if I am going to try and trade in my clunker today.

6. The GOP is correct
Whenever they are in charge, the government doesn't do anything correct. They should be treated like a 4-year old wanting to help in the kitchen. Here, look at the nice Argentine lady with the big bazooms, now go along and play.

I think "we" think it's a good idea, but that it didn't go far enough, that there's a lot of room for improvement, that it can be better.

At least, that's what it is for me. Great idea, poorly run.

Edited for clarity

11. I'm against it, too.
$4 billion spent on urban mass transit and interstate rail would be much wiser.

We have to wean ourselves off the individual automobile if we are going to survive as a nation and a species.

13. The first step is to "wean" ourselves off of gas guzzlers....

It's an incremental process....
