3. Built in Michigan.
Uh, IIRC. Probably should double check that.

ANYway, if that's true, that's one very good thing to come out of this program.

Second,
I really don't like ford but the ford focus is a solid car.

6. My 2001 Focus is no clunker.
Comin' off the line when the light turns green, well she blows 'em outta the water like you never seen. I get pushed out of shape and it's hard to steer when I get rubber in all four gears!

7. The Focus was the runner up for me 3 years ago
when I retired a Ford Ranger that was old enough to vote. The Focus was a solid little car, fun to drive, great on gas. It lost out to the Kia because I need more cargo space and because AC came as part of a "package" I didn't want and the Kia had it standard.

It was a very close call, though. Ford has finally made a great little car. It's a pity they never had enough brains to advertise it.

10. 60% of vehicles bought were cars, 40% were light trucks
Nearly half of the vehicles sold were from Ford, GM, Chrysler, and the other half would have been other manufacturers.

I wonder what percentages from which manufacturer the "clunkers" were?

In another story, it seemed that the Ford Exploder was the top trade-in. But that may have been only at Ford dealers.

11. If "nearly half" of the C4C money went to the Detroit 3, that means >50% went to foreign makes...
:sigh:

18. In June, domestic auto sales were 152,027 and imports were 307,965
In June, domestic light truck sales were 238,107 and imports were 161,748.

So in June, total vehicle sales were domestic 390,134 and import 469,713.

So an almost 50% share for domestic would be a big bump up in domestic share.

Of course, a lot of the candidate clunkers would be from the large number of domestic light trucks sold in the late '80s and '90s. These domestic vehicle owners might tend to buy domestic vehicles again.

But that is why the statistics on domestict retention versus domestic traded for an import and vice versa would be of interest.

19. Yeah, but don't forget that many "foreign" makers employ LOTS of
Americans at plants right here in the US. Toyota makes Corollas up in NorCal.

12. Has everyone lost sight that the "clunkers" trade-in thing was supposed to be for fuel-efficiency?
The 2001 Focus gets about 25 mpg. I thought the trade-ins had to get 17mpg or less.

This has turned into a bail-out for the new car dealers.

13. The #1 seller is the Focus
Not the #1 trade-in.

In other words, people are trading in their clunkers to get Focuses (Foci?)

16. My assistant, who is a bit of a car and motorcycle snob, lol,
LOVES her fiance's Ford Focus. He has a souped-up version, if you can call it that. I guess the German engineering is what makes it such a great car? Hope they don't change that and ruin the car to save money.

22. My republican friend is taking advantage of it....
although if the money is gone she' hoping that they'll pass the bill to extend it. She recently lost her husband and wants to trade in both cars for a brand new one. The minivan qualifies for the program and then she'd also turn in a pretty decent Saturan. (2003, 100k miles but not qualified). She figures since she is the only driver there is no use having 2 cars and why not get a new one while the program is available.

24. She would probably be better off selling the Saturn to a private party
Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 02:06 PM by NNN0LHI
The dealers won't give her anything for it. They don't put anything with 100,000+ miles on their lot. Goes right to the auto auction.

25. She's considering that but without her husband I think she wants whatever is less painful
we'll see. My roommate's daughter was interested in the Caravan but since it's part of the clunker deal my friend isn't selling it to anyone.
