Do they not get it?
Or is it just a partisan issue to bitch about and make the other side lose political points over?
I honestly try to see other points of view. but cannot find any part of myself which is that hypocritical to be able to relate to with them.

1. These are not critical thinkers. These are people who have had their
limbic cortexes shocked by the RW horseshit being pumped through the radio into their heads. It is an involuntary reflex.

2. I'm not a bit confused
because I know this is a position born of ignorance fostered by our third rate, third world corporate news media.

This is an opportunity to educate these poor old crocks. Oh, they'll never bother to find out the truth for themselves. We can only hope to plant a seed of doubt that maybe the radio and TV aren't being completely truthful.

4. I don't understand any of the opposition. I was discussing this with a co-worker on Friday and he
insisted that Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security all are badly run programs. Now the guy is 62 years old and I finally just said I'd be taking my SS and Medicare even if he wanted to decline his. It's like an unshakable belief that government is bad and private business is always good. I told him if so many businesses ran so efficiently, why did the feds have to bail them out?

8. I have gotten the same BS here on DU and it seems no amount of explanation
and logic phases them once they have made their minds up. One fellow said that his grandmother was doing fine so why should he have to pay into Social Security. I told him that the reason she is probably doing fine is because she's getting Social Security and Medicare. Would he rather pay for her instead? He replied that old people should plan ahead for their retirement and not expect young people to pay for them. So I gave up. He's no longer here incidentally finally receiving his stone pizza.

5. It amazes me that they haven't questioned the FICA deduction on their pay
checks. That was the very first thing I asked a question about when I received my very first paycheck back when I was a teenager.

I started a thread wondering that very same thing last week after seeing Representative Weiner's up or down vote on whether to repeal Medicare. :)

9. Heard recently about a guy at a town hall meeting who said "Keep your govt. mitts off my Medicare"..
and nobody could convince him that Medicare is a government program. Guess it's administered by Santa's (or Keebler's) elves during the off-season ('cause we all know it can't be faeries).

Don't recall if it was Bill Maher or DU where I heard it.

10. No, why would you be confused? Cognitive dissonance is an American pasttime.
Keep government out of the marketplace but send me my subsidy checks. The government can't do anything right; but I expect the potholes in my roads to be fixed, and pronto! Add to that the fact that many people don't know where all those goodies come from -- e.g., that Medicare is a federal program.

13. Not hard to understand at all.
You need to understand. "Medicare" is a welfare program for poor people. Not them.

14. don't you mean "Medicaid"? Medicare is for
everyone- (if they've paid in).

But maybe i'm being dense, and you are illustrating how some people view anything with the "medi" prefix.

:hi:

15. I think the logic goes something like this:
"I have medicare and I *earned* it" It's mine. I paid into it all those years I worked, so now I get that delayed benefit back.

Just like some do with SS, they think they are getting back what they paid into it. They don't realize that it doesn't work that way. That the bennies you get from the gov't as a senior are paid for by the people currently working.
