Change to program name from Cash for Clunkers to Economy Incentive
Instead of disqualifying cars from trade in, how about this idea:

Give the money to all cars, but base it on the differential between the old car and the new car.

If one has a car that gets 12 mpg and trades it on one that gets 22 mpg, that person gets X dollars based on a 10 mpg improvement.

If another car gets 30 mpg and is traded on a car that gets 40 mpg, she gets the very same rebate as the 12 mpg car, above.

Award dollars on a sliding scale. The bigger the differential, the more money.

**THAT** incents improvement.

1. Or, label the opposition to the program "Insure Global Warming
and economic ruin."

4. How about we spend $3B on finding a replacement
for the internal combustion engine and call it America Saves the Earth.

3. And a web page where the dealer can log in and enter the details for a quick answer
Mirror the page some there's ease of access. A no brainer.

We've got a car that already qualifies and have been shopping. I no longer need the car we used when my disabled folks lived with us. They've passed away, so I don't need a car with a trunk big enough to handle a wheelchair and a week's worth of groceries, plus big doorways to maneuver the folks in and out. Now it's time for something smaller for me and hubby.

This is an ideal time for us and we'll take it for the right vehicle. I also like your idea, too.
