Obama 'Joker' Poster Causing a Stir in L.A.

Obama 'Joker' Poster Causing a Stir in L.A.
KTLA News
3:34 PM PDT, August 3, 2009

LOS ANGELES -- A poster showing President Barack Obama as Heath Ledger's "Joker" character from "The Dark Knight" is creating a stir on the streets of Los Angeles where the image began appearing over the weekend.

The Obama-Joker poster shows President Obama with white face paint, dark eye shadow and smudged red lipstick and also has the word "socialism" printed in bold, dark letters under the image of his face.

It's unclear who created the image and who is posting it across the city. No one has taken credit so far.

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson is calling the depiction, politically mean spirited and dangerous.

Hutchinson is challenging the group or individual that put up the poster to have the courage and decency to publicly identify themselves.

Not that the winger perps would worry about thinking it through.

24. The Joker definitely was not a socialist.
I'm offended by this poster - as an Obama supporter, and as a Heath Ledger/Joker fan.

3. As much as I hate this thing...
...I'm afraid the artist is protected by the 1st Amendment.

Unless you could prove that the Joker's "smile" can be interpreted as a bodily threat against the President, which actually doesn't seem too hard to do.

5. I wish the author of the poster was correct.
If only Obama were truly a socialist, we might get some positive change. Alas, he is not. He has done some good, but the health "insurance reform" package he negotiated is far less than this liberal would like, and much less than any socialist would demand.

He is a politician, like bush was, and poking fun at them by the opposition does not always equate to race.

34. I don't find it racist
If the creator's attitude is that Obama's a joker, well that's legitimate political comment although I don't agree with it. The Joker character has always worn white makeup as a parody of a circus clown. I find nothing racist about it.

It's well done, I think. First and foremost, I like the image, which makes imaginative use of several cultural memes at once. Second, I don't see it as an overtly political statement, except possibly so tongue-in-cheek as to be more humorous than offensive. I mean, "socialism?"

And as another DUer pointed out, it's art, and protected as such.

19. I guess. I always thought he was the quintessential anti-social-"ist".
Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 06:59 PM by Hansel
This is what is wrong with the Right's humor. They suck at it.

The Joker was not a socialist, he was anti-social and psychotic. In fact, there is no evidence whatsoever he gave a damn about politics or was politically active.

Obama is not anti-social or a psychotic. The most he is is mildly passive-aggressive.

Obama is not a mime.

Obama does not appear to have an issue with applying lipstick erratically across his face. I don't even think he wears makeup. Well, maybe for press conferences. But it seems to be applied without being noticeable.

In order for the poster to work, there has to be some kind of basis in reality. Otherwise it's just an amateurish way of insulting someone.

So the conclusion you can draw is that the artist wanted to insult Obama both by claiming he represents a form of government which he clearly does not (one could only wish) and by again drawing attention to his race in a demeaning and degrading way.

Quite clever, not.

29. Why ask why?
Perhaps there is no reason other than to create controversy, puzzlement and/or simply creating another viral meme?

Look at some of the responses posted here... "racist"... "interpreted as a bodily threat against the President"... "hating someone because of skin color" (assuming those posters are serious).

And from Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson... "the depiction, politically mean spirited and dangerous"... challenging the group or individual that put up the poster to have the courage and decency to publicly identify themselves.

Why assume "the Right" had anything to do with it?

The whole thing has an "Anon" or "Church of the SubGenius" quality/quirkiness to it.

What's the connection (if any)?

Hell... maybe like the Joker, Obama and "socialism" is a blight on society with no redeeming qualities?

I'm in no position to call it "art" or not... I just love off-the wall shit that gets peoples attention and opinions on phenomena that has no deep meaning or intent to speculate or get worked up about; when the real intent is to get people to speculate and get all worked up about.

Anyone remember "Obey Giant"?

The OBEY sticker campaign can be explained as an experiment in Phenomenology. Heidegger describes Phenomenology as “the process of letting things manifest themselves.” Phenomenology attempts to enable people to see clearly something that is right before their eyes but obscured; things that are so taken for granted that they are muted by abstract observation.

The FIRST AIM OF PHENOMENOLOGY is to reawaken a sense of wonder about one’s environment. The OBEY sticker attempts to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the sticker and their relationship with their surroundings. Because people are not used to seeing advertisements or propaganda for which the product or motive is not obvious, frequent and novel encounters with the sticker provoke thought and possible frustration, nevertheless revitalizing the viewer’s perception and attention to detail. The sticker has no meaning but exists only to cause people to react, to contemplate and search for meaning in the sticker. Because OBEY has no actual meaning, the various reactions and interpretations of those who view it reflect their personality and the nature of their sensibilities.

Many people who are familiar with the sticker find the image itself amusing, recognizing it as nonsensical, and are able to derive straightforward visual pleasure without burdening themselves with an explanation. The PARANOID OR CONSERVATIVE VIEWER however may be confused by the sticker’s persistent presence and condemn it as an underground cult with subversive intentions. Many stickers have been peeled down by people who were annoyed by them, considering them an eye sore and an act of petty vandalism, which is ironic considering the number of commercial graphic images everyone in American society is assaulted with daily.

Another phenomenon the sticker has brought to light is the trendy and CONSPICUOUSLY CONSUMPTIVE nature of many members of society. For those who have been surrounded by the sticker, its familiarity and cultural resonance is comforting and owning a sticker provides a souvenir or keepsake, a memento. People have often demanded the sticker merely because they have seen it everywhere and possessing a sticker provides a sense of belonging. The Giant sticker seems mostly to be embraced by those who are (or at least want to seem to be) rebellious. Even though these people may not know the meaning of the sticker, they enjoy its slightly disruptive underground quality and wish to contribute to the furthering of its humorous and absurd presence which seems to somehow be antiestablishment/societal convention. Giant stickers are both embraced and rejected, the reason behind which, upon examination reflects the psyche of the viewer. Whether the reaction be positive or negative, the stickers existence is worthy as long as it causes people to consider the details and meanings of their surroundings. In the name of fun and observation.

It's not that hard to get the point... He's a joker. He tricked people into voting for nebulous concepts like "Change". The joke is on you, Hansel. Oh wait, no it isn't.. you wanted socialism. I'm sorry.

Seems about as amateurish to me as all the "Bush is a monkey" posters we saw for 8 years.

No big deal. Political expression. I don't see it as rising to the level of a threat (though I'm sure that Commander Bunnypants' supporters would disagree if such a depiction were made of George W. Bush, though I recall several equations of his wife with the Jack Nicholson incarnation of the character - very unfair to Jack, in my opinion). Even stupid political expression is covered by the First Amendment. Let the baby have his bottle.
