I watch alot of British TV (on BCC America)
and like any TV shows some of them wind up featuring a visit to a hospital. In Being Human's case the main characters actually work at one. In all of these shows you never see huge lines of people waiting for medical care. Instead you see clean, professionally run places where people get wonderful care. Don't you think, if these horror stories were remotely true, that they would be a staple of TV, like insurance horror stories are here?

1. Television is still as real as the producers make it out to be. Not to mention, it's fiction.

I refuse to let fiction dictate reality.

(though I sometimes won't deny the temptation and at least watch for empty entertainment sake...)

18. I am not claiming that TV is reality
but it surely is going to represent it to some extent. Surely if people were dying on waiting lists in Britain then the TV would likely reflect that to some extent. Just like it tends to do here.

2. Television is a reflection of society.
In this case, that program was reflecting the reality of British modern health care.

9. It's a reflection of the network's executives, embellished by the writers' and producers' mindsets
Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 07:48 PM by Deja Q
It may or may not reflect the truth.

The only way to know is for a British person, of which we have MANY on DU, who can corroborate the television with the reality.

BTW: Let me know when "Doctor Who" becomes real and when he materializes nearby, and I'll steal the TARDIS just to get away from our own society...

5. I've found American ERs and British A&E units to be pretty much identical.
I haven't found either to be particularly bad. Mostly involves a lot of waiting around for something to happen. Neither is atrocious, neither is brilliant.

6. Recommend. A link to support your post would be nice.
I agree with your comment, but think you need to beef up your post with something others can read to understand your topic better.

13. I think it's obvious; that television apparently reflects real life...
:spray:

Everybody also likes to parallel modern sci-fi as well, forgetting it's the topical opinions of the people who produce the show that they like more than anything else. It shows. In peoples' posts.

8. You know what I hate about lots of Hollywood teevee shows and movies?
They have people working crappy jobs but amazingly they have their own apartments and maybe even a car and nice wardrobes, to boot! The Great American Lie.

10. Quite. The Golden Girls always complained about money, but their wardrobes...
Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 07:48 PM by Deja Q
they never wore the same outfit twice!

When I poked fun at this in the lounge and tried to ask how, in any reality, they could afford all of those fancy outfits, everyone snapped at me and reminded me that television is fiction. (Well duh...)

12. At least they shared a house and Blanche already owned it. No, I mean
people living alone, working a crap job, and being able to AFFORD to live. That's not real life.

14. That WAS a plus... they did allow some reality... but the show, like most television, is not really
based in real life. It can uses real life concepts to draw on for the drama/comedy/whatever, but anything after that is where the balance ends and the dreamworld begins.
