I have one small problem with the "cash for clunkers" program. |
|
It was reported that 47% of the new cars bought were from the Big Three. The other 53% were foreign cars. However, I did hear a Congresslady say that about half of those were made in America. So that means that we are paying about 30% to these foreign car companies as a rebate?
I have no problem with paying the $4500 on any of the Big Three cars or even those foreign companies with cars made in this country, but I am not crazy about paying for these cars made in other countries. Any ideas on this?

1. It is designed to stimulate American consumers. You want them to not buy crap from foreign mfgs, |

2. I hate that we're financing asset depreciation. |
|
Ford is doing pretty well because of this, so that's a plus.

3. They could have called it a "tax break"... |
|
Then what would have been the complaint?

4. If the govt is subsidizing the purchase of brand new cars only |
|
then no matter what it's called, it's still financing asset depreciation.

6. There was a talk about it and the conclusion was that we cannot |
|
retaliate against foreign manufacturing, it breaks various trade agreements and they can retaliate back at us.
Besides, many of the foreign cars are manufactured here - same idea of jobs and revenue - while many Chrylser and GM are manufactured in Canada; they can save on health care costs.
