Top staffers at the National Republican Senatorial Committee — the group in charge of running the GOP’s Senate election campaigns — knew about Senator John Ensign’s affair with a former staffer long before the Nevada senator confessed to it last month.

Ensign headed the NRSC last year as the GOP fought to retain seats in the Senate.

An email exchange obtained by the Las Vegas Sun shows Mike Slanker, Ensign’s top staffer on the committee, discussing the affair with Doug Hampton, a close friend of Ensign’s and the husband of Cynthia Hampton, the Ensign ex-staffer with whom the senator was having an affair.

The emails suggest that the Republican Senatorial Committee knew about Ensign’s affair as long as a year ago.

A PDF of the emails can be found here: http://media.lasvegassun.com/media/pdfs/blogs/documents/2009/08/03/slanker1.pdf
