I understand that this is not good "political" talk, but sometimes when someone comes at me with "You're one of those blame America first haters" I feel like just erupting and saying...
"Let's see, we're only the last and biggest national power left on the face of the earth - yeah who else should we blame FIRST?
"We're only dead last among or next top twenty industrial rivals in poverty, income inequality, infant mortality, health care expenditure vs. coverage, etc - am I supposed to blame Al Queda for that?
"We've killed more people - civilians and combatants - in aggression we initiated than any other country or sect or terrorist on the planet, and our motives for violence have repeatedly been unashamedly acknowledged to be to preserve and increase the economic prosperity and pursue American economic interests around the globe - I'm sorry, is there someone else I'm supposed to blame FIRST? Oh yeah, Bin Ladin?
"Our economic policies very deliberately and purposefully keep the southern hemisphere in perpetual poverty and servitude to the norther hemisphere or so-called "industrialized West" - we support and participate in the loaning of so-called "developing countries" money they desperately need in order to not starve to death and in return demand repayment requirements that virtually garuntee these countries will never pay back the debt - then we demand that these countries privatize all of their natural resources and national assess for sale and exploitation by trans-national corporate interests.... I'm sorry, who am I supposed to be blaming again? "
If someone wants me to talk about how we have an incredible standard of living compared to most of the world, we can certainly talk about that. If someone wants to talk about the places where the United States leads the world - such as in scientific and medical discovery - we can talk about that. I'm glad about those things. Hell, I'm glad I live in the United States....
But that's not incompatible with having the courage to honestly talk about the serious ways in which the policies of this country are hurting the world. And yes, I do "blame America first" because its my fucking country, I fucking live here, and of all the places in the world, this the one place where my understanding of our problems can actually possibly make some sort of fucking difference!
