"Randian philosophy is gentle and peace-loving and isn't at all about contempt for the poor."
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 12:55 PM by arbusto_baboso
This idiotic line was actually uttered to me by a libertopian moron on another message board.

Do people who read Ayn Rand really NOT see how believing that the wealthy deserve what they have will eventually *naturally* extend to believing that the poor are poor because they deserve it and are inferior?

The ignorance and unselfconscious aggrandizement are astonishing.

1. It's NOT about contempt for the poor.
It's about insulating yourself and not SEEING the poor.

You can't have contempt for that which you do not see.

21. That's how some are still approaching health care.
"We have the finest health care system in the world!"

Really? REALLY?!?!??

Ya' know, just waving the fucking flag and chanting "USA! USA!" doesn't cut it anymore...

11. A philosophy so simple, an infant can understand it
Which shows the cognitive and emotional development of those who would champion it.

5. Ayn Rand inner-circle member Alan Greenspan on their philosophy:
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 01:10 PM by brentspeak
“ ‘Atlas Shrugged’ is a celebration of life and happiness. Justice is unrelenting. Creative individuals and undeviating purpose and rationality achieve joy and fulfillment. Parasites who persistently avoid either purpose or reason perish as they should.

Alan Greenspan, http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/15/business/15atlas.html?_r=1">writing to the New York Times in 1957, in response to a Times' negative review of "Atlas Shrugged".

13. Exactly what I was thinking....

the worst parasites are those taking advantage of government-corporate collusion at the expense of the taxpayer.

17. Agreed. The current brand of parasites are so toxic they are in danger of destroying their host.
Unless <a miracle happens and> we manage to shake them off.

6. Well in Ayn Rand's philosophy she deserves the sexual attention of

Nathaniel Branden and it is ethical for her to break up the Branden marriage but when Nathaniel Brandon cheats on her with acress Patrecia Scott then he is intellectually damaged and has to be publicly discredited and removed from the "Objectivist Movement".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathaniel_Branden

So in the end Randism is all about "ME".

8. There was a "rander" on Thoms show earlier basically saying...
that if you have a child, but cant afford treatment of an illness, FU. That its an INDIVIDUALS responsibility and no one elses.

16. And Thom asked then whether or not the poor and middle class have to rely on
the kindness and generosity of the rich for help. No response.

I actually thought the Rander has strong logical arguments and that he did a good job...it's just that the underlying ideology is so cold and disconnected from reality. If everyone was upper middle class, then maybe more of the tenets would be useful.

Thom caught him in another problem...the guy was saying that our health care needs to go back to the way it was in the 40's when we had great, reasonable care. And Thom, who knows his stuff, pointed out that all hospitals were required to be non-profit back then!

9. In their warped little philosophy
All you need to do to become rich is work hard.

With that in mind, anyone who isn't rich must either be lazy or they must not want to be rich and is therefore satisfied with being poor.

No contempt needed.

Just a complete misunderstanding of the nature of the world.

12. But..... it isn't much of a stretch for Randians to take that to...
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 01:42 PM by arbusto_baboso
"If the poor want to have an easy life without working for it, then they are just plain evil."

And I've seen religious nuts use Jayzus to back up their Randian social Darwinism, too. Turn on a religious channel any time of the day or night and watch for an hour. I guarantee eventually you'll hear one of the huckster/prechers say something about wealth being a reward for righteousness, and poverty a punishment for "immorality".

of the last 2000 years."

Granted, the same people who say that, watch television shows like "OW! My Balls!", but still...
