California bans threatening noose displays
California bans threatening noose displays

Thursday, August 6, 2009

(08-06) 17:23 PDT Sacramento, Calif. (AP) --

California law already bans threatening displays of swastikas or burning crosses. Now add nooses to the list.

On Thursday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation making such displays punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

The bill by Democratic Assemblywoman Wilma Carter of Rialto would make it a misdemeanor to hang a noose on someone else's property or at a school or workplace.

She introduced the bill after noose hangings were displayed in several Halloween decorations last year. Two such displays were effigies of then-Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

5. Yeah, which is fine. Because there is no hiding who the perp is.
It's like putting a big sign on your house that says "I'm a racist pig!" Only genuine morans would do it.

6. Hanging someone or something in effigy
has been a part of political protests for centuries.

Not that I approve.

7. When it is done as mockery, fine. When it is done as a threat, it's not
fine. But whatever your motivation, you need to do it on your OWN goddam lawn, and not on someone else's. No sneaking around at night burning crosses on the local black family's lawn. And no sneaking around and hanging our president in effigy where no one will know who did it.

You wanna be a racist fuckwad, you own up to it publically (not you personally).

9. Where do you draw the line
between threat and mockery? It's almost impossible to define. People hang effigies of George Bush it's simply a sign of disapproval about how he ran the country. Hang one of Barack Obama and for obvious reasons it takes on a whole new meaning, intentional or not.

11. If you do it ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY where everyone in town can
see what a douchebag you are, it's free speech. You sneak around doing that crap at night, anonymously, and on somebody else's property, it ain't.

Pretty fucking simple to me.

15. People weren't hanging Bush in effigy because he was white
We're seeing a lot of racist assholes crawling out of the woodwork, suddenly it's acceptable to hang a black man in effigy. Fucking disgusting.

19. Absolutely. Do you support hate crimes legislation?
Motivation has always played a factor in prosecuting crimes.

Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 10:32 PM by ProgressiveProfessor

10. protected speech....
snip...
The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, will not ban displays by a homeowner, which are considered constitutionally protected speech.

12. Some of us are smart enough to realize that a noose in not inherently racist
and those who don't can be ignored, though they tend to be noisy and hysterical. This is really much ado about nothing.

17. If its tolerable to hang someone in effigy, it is tolerable to hang anyone in effigy
be it Bush or Obama. To assume prima facie racism is bigotry in itself

20. however, those displays were probably in the yard of the person
who put them up...and this law doesn't cover that, does it? it just says you can't put up such a display on your neighbor's property, school or workplace.

the assholes who had these displays in their front yards will have them again without consequence.

(not to change the subject, but i used to hang white sheeted ghosts in a tree for halloween. not with a noose. i'd just tie them up and they looked like they were flying....spooky! then the tree got cut down and there went my ghostly graveyard. damn! besides, i loved that tree...)
