St. Louis Business Journal - by Kelsey Volkmann

The National Labor Relations Board has found Lumiere Place and President Casino violated labor laws and has threatened to sue the casinos if they don’t recognize the hotel, garment and restaurant workers’ union.

Ralph Tremain, regional director of the St. Louis NLRB office, said Thursday that he called the Pinnacle Entertainment-owned casinos Tuesday to inform them that the board found labor law violations.

To raise awareness about the situation, Local 74 of Workers United has invited actor Danny Glover to participate in a news conference at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in front of Lumiere Place at Laclede’s Landing, said David Morton, organizing director for Local 74.

Glover’s mother was a housekeeper so he is very active in labor issues, Morton said.

In May, lawyers for the St. Louis casinos sent letters to representatives of Unite HERE Local 74 and its spinoff, Workers United, announcing a withdrawal of recognition of Local 74, affecting about 750 workers.

The casinos stopped recognizing Local 74 because it had started receiving competing claims about which union was representing its kitchen and housekeeping workers, creating confusion about the official union representation, Todd George, general manager and vice president at Lumiere, said in May.
