Rahm warns liberal groups to stop ads.
Rahm Emanuel warns liberal groups to stop ads

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel warned liberal groups this week to stop running ads against Democratic member of Congress. The powerful top aide to President Obama made his feelings known at the weekly closed-door strategy session of an array of progressive organizations, according to two sources who were there.

Emanuel’s request came on the same day that Obama himself told a meeting
of Democratic senators that he didn’t like seeing dollars used by liberal groups to target congressional Democrats.

Some on the left believe administration officials are making such statements only as a favor to Democratic legislators whose votes they’ll ultimately need.

But the White House indicates to POLITICO that it truly believe the ads aimed at Democrat are counter-productive and largely ineffectual. There is no winking and nodding when Obama and Emanuel deliver their message, say West Wing officials.

He promised me during the campaign that I would have the right to buy into the same health care plan that Congress has. That's what I want. Period.

31. Sounds good on paper but in reality
they have to govern all the people, and listen to all sides not just the liberal democrats. Which means sometimes the democratic base will have to get their toes stepped on. But it will be interesting to see how much toe stepping people will put up with before becoming vindictive in the next election cycle.

41. Wresting power.
1) Organize true grass roots movements. Dean's DFA, which helped give a Illinois State Senator his start, is a good example.

2) Develop non-advertising supported but still free (or cheap) communications networks.

3) Utilize organizations that are already working to wrest power from corporations -- labor unions for a start.

4) Study other successful movements -- Paris 1793 and 1871, for example.

53. Like I said
I thought he would be a different kind of politician due to the vast, individual voter driven, grass roots financial support that I felt he was getting.

I am like Bill Maher in response to Rachel Maddow. Rachel said, "He ran as a centrist. He didn't run as me." And Bill said, and I repeat, "Maybe I am guilty of hearing what I wanted to hear, then."

67. Always pay attention to which candidates the MSM is giving the most coverage
and then look for someone else to report.

We don't really pick the candidate. Last year they got whittled down to Clinton and Obama - either one was acceptable to our corporate masters. The other candidates were ignored, marginalized or ridiculed.

Most people don't spend the time on politics we do here they only know what they see on TV.

85. "The most radical revolutionary is a conservative the day after the revolution."
Anyone who is "in power" is inherently part of the ruling class.

So, the best thing is to keep those in power "in check" and make sure they remember where they came from and who has the power.

If people don't constantly make noise, so to speak, they aren't reminding those in office who's the boss.

132. a "centrist" is code-speak for a wishy-washy fence-sitting noncommittal coward
"centrists" are chameleons who put on whatever people want them to put on.
they stand for NOTHING, because they don't have the courage.
no progress or advancement in this country was ever made by a mama-boy sissy "centrist," because centrists don't have the guts to stand up for anything, they just go along to get along.

Rahm Emmanuel and the rest of the blue dog "democrats" are nothing but republicans who won't admit it. They know republicans are not very popular now, so they won't be that at this time. Later, if the repukes get popular again, they'll be "blue dog republicans." Whatever puts money in their bank accounts, no matter who is screwed or how weak and ineffectual it makes them, that is what they will be. "principles"? "ethics"? the "courage of their beliefs"? all foreign concepts to blue-dog cowards, because they have no principles, ethics, or courage. They are corporate tools and couldn't care less about We The People.

New ads target Blue Dogs who voted against against health care reform

The three Blue Dog Democrats who voted against the health care reform bill last week in the Energy and Commerce Committee are the targets of ad campaigns in their home districts over recess. MoveOn.org Political Action will run radio ads in the districts of John Barrow (D-GA), Jim Matheson (D-UT) and Charlie Melancon (D-LA), all of whom voted against the bill in committee last Friday, July 31st.

Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 09:52 PM by Hippo_Tron
That's about the weakest condemnation I can possibly think of. Rahm didn't go to the press and tell them, he said something in a meeting and then somebody leaked it to politico. It may have been an authorized leak it may have not but either way it's a weak ass way of condemning the ads.

If the White House really wanted to make a forceful condemnation of the ads it would've been done by the President or at the very least by Gibbs at the podium.

They're throwing a tiny bone to the conservadems who are pissed off about the ads. But if anything it shows that the ads are working and the conservadems aren't happy about them.

I know it's an over-used metaphor but Obama is playing chess here. I will change my opinion on the subject if I see a condemnation with some real muscle from the White House.

76. A note about members of the Politico advertising network
" The deal, struck in the run-up to U.S. President-elect Barack Obama taking office, will bring together about 120 journalists in Washington, D.C. covering politics and business. Reuters is a division of global information company Thomson Reuters Corp (TRI.TO) (TRIL.L), and Politico is a unit of Capital News Co. LLC.

The agreement will offer the two organization's combined coverage to 60 newspapers and 40 broadcasters currently part of an advertising network run by Politico. Other media companies would be able to join."

"Current members of the Politico advertising network include The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Arizona Republic, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Denver Post, and the Cleveland Plain Dealer."

our interests and side with the corporation bribery against us. Does it really matter most of the time what the letter behind their name is when both sides vote the same way?

You want to reign someone in? Kick ass on those Blue Dogs - get the health care bill passed before you blow this opportunity. Because if (when?) you do - you don't need to worry about the ads targeting a few - you're going to lose so many seats, it'll make 1994 look like a Democratic landslide.

We're going to get the 'change' we voted for one way or the other - the only question is if you're going to help us? Or need to be replaced with those who will
