Alinsky's Rules for Radicals:
Rule 1: "Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have."
By orchestrating town hall protests, the Right is trying to give the impression that there is a groundswell of popular support for them and anger at Obama and the Democrats.
It's not true... but that's the impression they want to give.
Rule 2: "Never go outside the expertise of your people."
Their attacks are kept simple. "No to socialism!", etc. Why? Because their minions aren't smart enough to formulate complex arguments.
Rule 3: "Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy."
In other words, look for ways to increase uncertainty and insecurity. Listen how callers to Sean Hannity's show are shouted over with questions like "Have you read page 425 of the bill? *I* have!" when there is no feasible way for the caller to look it up and read it that fast or to have memorized what was on it. It puts the opposition on the defensive.
Rule 4: "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules."
In other words, since Obama promised to be more "transparent", require transparency about EVERY LITTLE factoid of his life. "Where are his kindergarten records?" "Why don't we know his distinguishing birthmarks?" "What were his grades in high school?" "Who paid for his college tuition?" "What was the name of the doctor and nurses at his birth?"
Bombard the opposition with inane requests. When they don't answer, accuse them of "having something to hide."
Sound familiar?
Rule 5: "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon."
Obambi. The Kenyan. Teleprompter.
Need I say more?
Rule 6: "A good tactic is one your people enjoy."
Posting in blogs. Sending email "jokes". Engaging in conspiracy theories. acting like bullies at townhalls.
Rule 7: "A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag."
Hence the outrage-du-jour tactics of the right. Spend a week screaming about Sotomayor, then move on. Spend a week screaming about Obama being a racist, then move on. Spend a few weeks screaming about the government takeover of GM, then move on.
Rule 8: "Keep the pressure on. Never let up."
Need I elaborate? This is *ALL* they do.
Rule 9: "The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself."
Why are Democratic congressmen so afraid of a loud minority? Why are they cancelling townhalls?
Because of the threat. But in reality, the organized right-wing groups are a bunch of cowards who can't stand open debate (because they're not equipped to engage in it).
Rule 10: "If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive."
Tearing down Obama and the Democrats popularity ratings will eventually lead to a shift toward the GOP... so they hope.
Rule 11: "The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative."
Well.. the GOP isn't offering any constructive alternatives.... which is probably why their attacks aren't successful.
Newt knew this. That's why he came up with the "Contract with America". As bogus as it was, it was a plan that the populace could understand.
Rule 12: "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."
Need I say more?
The right wing of this country is engaging in Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" in a far more blatant way than the left ever did.
Which is why they accuse the left of doing it.
Projection.
