Wal-mart To Begin Selling Fake Girl Scout Cookies
Wal-Mart Knocks Off the Girl Scouts

by CV Harquail on August 3, 2009

It’s not discriminating against women, strong-arming suppliers, polluting neighborhoods or racing to the bottom of http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_49/b3911401.htm">the China Price. No, this time it’s closer to home, and in my case, really close to home. This time Wal-Mart is knocking off the Girl Scouts.

Of course, you know the Girl Scouts, those enthusiastic girls organized into local troops, learning about leadership and being resourceful? Those sweet girls raising money selling Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Does and Samoas? What could Wal-mart possibly do to harm Girl Scouts? Wal-mart has copied the Girl Scouts’ two best selling cookie types, Thin Mints and Tagalongs.

Wal-mart is selling Fake Girl Scout Cookies.

Wal-mart has fake Girl Scout cookies in ‘beta’ distribution, on their way to a national rollout. Because the cookies are ‘reasonable facsimiles’ of the authentic Girl Scout cookies (I sampled them myself at BlogHer ‘09 last week) and are being sold at an everyday low price, these cookies are poised to snatch cookie sales right out of the hands of the Girl Scouts themselves.

Thin Mints Cookies pay for Girl Scouting

Every cookie fan in the US knows that the Girl Scouts in the USA make all of the money to run their organization from their annual cookie sales. You might not know that Thin Mints, the most popular flavor, account for 25% of the Girl Scouts’ sales. Said another way, those Thin Mint cookies account for 25% of the Girl Scouts’ cookie income.

- It's just business girls, nothing personal. Just the way the cookie crumbles -- if you get my meaning.

Now run along somewhere and play......

1. That little girl kind of scares me...
And really, what's the fun of buying a GSC (fake) any time of the year?

There is a pleasant sense of tradition seeing those girl scouts at the store/K-mart, etc.

I mean we all know (in the US anyway) someone whose daughter (and now sons) is in the scouts and is selling cookies!

I wish this surprised me but it doesn't.

That is really 5 kinds of fucked up... especially considering that in front of Wal-mart stores is a common place for the girls to set up shop!

13. I reviewed them!!!
I asked them if their Greed knew of any limits....putting the Girl Scouts out of biz is a new low even for them.

Did you know that the Walton family has more money than the entire lower third income earners of the U.S. population? That's over 100 million people!!!!!

They make me sick.

They probably tell everyone they are the 'first.'

I'm sure they didn't like my review.

4. I don't think this will hurt the Girl Scouts
People, knowing GS cookie proceeds are what keeps the GS going, will still buy GS cookies. What do you get, 21 cookies for $3.50 when you buy them from the Scouts? If you were buying them just because you wanted cookies, you'd want at least a pound for that much money.

ME: Awwwww, sure honey. Grandpa will buy all the cookies you got.
GRANDDAUGHTER: Great Grandpa! That's just be $932.00. {pretty smile}

9. I had no idea so much of the Girl Scout's budget came from these sales.
We only had experience with the Cub Scouts and later the Boy Scouts with our sons, and it seemed that the popcorn sales we participated in were more for kicks than much needed funding.

We frequently buy the Girl Scout cookies, but I had no idea they were so dependent on the sales for funding, very interesting.

10. I've only eaten "thin-mint" style cookies from Girl Scouts that sold to me. Actually, it would be
their mothers and fathers who would bring the sales/invoice sheets to work and I would buy a few boxes from them.

12. That's mine as well....
...and I buy them mostly because then it's easier for me to convince myself they aren't as fattening. If I ate fewer cookies, that would probably help.

17. YES!!! I'm bringing CRATES of these to work
when "that time of year" rolls around and co-workers somehow feel it appropriate to bring their small children to the office to solicit donations in exchange for treats. "SHUT THE FUCK UP, YOU LITTLE SHIT! I'VE GOT THE SAME COOKIE FOR LESS THAN HALF PRICE! AND THE MENTAL DEFECTIVE AT THE MALWART WHO SOLD IT TO ME WASN'T HALF AS ANNOYING!"

27. That's no problem at all. The last time the GS sold cookies at
the front of the grocery store we use, I bought a case of thin mints to put in the freezer for Miz O, and paid for three more cases for the GS troop to do with as they saw fit.

24. Every year, I'd buy 3 boxes of Thin Mints, put em in the freezer, crack one box open
saying to myself "I'll just have a couple" and then to proceed to eat the WHOLE FREAKING BOX!

After that, I take the remaining 2 boxes and give them to the first person I see.

Every. Year.

Blizzards??????? Did they buy up 50 cases during the GS Cookie sale? Do they have an arrangement w/GS cookie manufacturers? Are they using the Wal-Mart fakes????

Inquiring minds want to know before I sucumb to a craving.

34. They have a licensing deal, and a deal with the manufacturer
They couldn't call them Tagalong Blizzards if they didn't have one. Instead, they'd have to call them "Malwart Fake Replica Cookie Blizzards."

29. What...
The exclusivity of Girl Scout cookies is what makes the cookies really sell. But now, Wal-mart is shoving itself in front of these little girls, and knocking on your door to sell you their almost-as-good fake Thin Mints and Fake Tagalongs, whenever you want them.

WTF...hyperbole much?

I think it’s interesting that, up until now, no national cookie manufacturer/retailer has seen fit to approximate the Thin Mint or the Tagalong. For whatever reason, they’ve steered clear of the Girl Scouts’ special cookies. But not Wal-mart.

So...there are no other thin mint cookies! Oh, except that there are...which kind of invalidates the argument. Tagalongs are "Crispy vanilla cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with a chocolate coating." according to Wikipedia. Doesn't sound that unique to me.

IMO they're not fake GS cookies unless they falsely claim some kind of connection with the girl scouts. Even if these cookies were unique (which they're not, apparently), nobody gets permanent monopolies. Patents only last 20 years. Maybe it's time for the girl Scouts to try something other than selling the same kinds of cookies over and over.

Yes, I buy some occasionally from the girl scouts, though I usually just give them to a friend. I don't find them tasty.
