Lou Dobbs' right-wing war on health care reform

August 06, 2009 9:08 pm ET

Lou Dobbs has advanced discredited right-wing smears about health care reform efforts, including the notions that end-of-life counseling could lead to "euthanasia" and that President Obama said he "doesn't even know what's in" the House health care bill. Dobbs has also touted GOP Sen. John Barrasso as "one of the leading experts on ... health care" and has provided a forum for serial misinformer Betsy McCaughey to falsely claim that the economic recovery package would allow the federal government to eliminate "whatever" it deems to be "unnecessary" health care.

Dobbs suggests that end-of-life counseling might lead to "euthanasia"

Echoing right-wing falsehood, Dobbs asks of "end of life" counseling: "What's next? Euthanasia?" Dobbs' suggestion that health care reform efforts could ultimately lead to "euthanasia" echoes a discredited right-wing myth that a provision in the House health care reform bill would require that seniors receive "mandatory" end-of-life counseling sessions that would, in Betsy McCaughey's words, "tell them how to end their life sooner." Versions of this myth have been repeated by Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, and The Washington Times. Like Dobbs, Fox News' Dick Morris said of health care reform efforts that senior citizens are "getting that this is creeping euthanasia" and Fox News' Peter Johnson Jr. suggested that the House legislation is "a subtle form of euthanasia."

2. So, this is where that rumor came from?
We fought it yesterday and I figured it had to have come from the Repubs.

Lou Dobbs is losing it. I think he has something seriously wrong with his head.

3. Isn't it amazing that people who have lived longer can be talked into killing themselves?
I mean, it's obvious they would be easily duped into ending their lives, right? The older they are the more likely they will agree to offing themselves.

Teh irony!

4. actually my dad did do something like that several years ago...
he was losing the fight with cancer and his doctor told him he could extend his life another 6 months. after hearing this he decided not do the new treatment for another 6 months of life. he told us that he was basically ending his life. he suffered another few months before he died. it was his decision not anyone else's. he had the right to end his life and watching him suffer makes me wonder why we can`t end our lives without suffering so.

my mother suffered a major stroke and we were offered the chance to agree to extraordinary measures to save her. but do to the severity and her other medical problems she had less than a year to live. my sisters and i made the decision to take her off any measure to save her. she was put on a morphine drip and she died several days later.

examples like this happen everyday in america and for anyone to claim it does`t is a lier. people who intentionally frighten those who are facing the end of their lives are pure evil. may their christian devil have a special room for them

6. It might indeed, and if it's *voluntary*, then so what?
I'm uncomfortable with the idea myself (sometimes, anyway), but there's a bit of a difference between someone with inoperable cancer wanting a painless out on the one hand and gassing good proper christians or whatever it is the Republicans are claiming Obama's going to do.
