I realized I can't think of anyone. Everything is so polarized. Most public figures -- political or not -- generate distrust from one side or the other due to their corporate associations and many other reasons.
I was trying to think of who could sit on a televised panel to have a discussion about the various healthcare issues since the town hall meetings are NOT working. I couldn't think of one person the majority of people would most likely listen to.
I think the "conservatives" have many more public figures they stand (lock step) behind. It's harder for liberals and progressives to agree on who we respect wholeheartedly and would listen to.
I thought Walter Cronkite was beloved or respected by most, only to find upon his death that the older Republicans see him as a rabid liberal. Even Walter would no longer be the Most Trusted Man in America.
I think we've become so polarized as a nation that there is no hope for reconciliation.
But back to my original question: Any Americans you can think of that the majority of people truly respect? Real people, not TV characters. LOL.
Colin Powell is the only one I can think of who comes close. I'm sure there are others...I'm hoping...but I can't think of them.
