Senator Mel Martinez resigning End of August

Mel Martinez resigning

Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) will be stepping down from the Senate, according to several senior Republican sources familiar with his thinking.

He made the announcement at a morning staff meeting, where he said he will not be returning to the Senate after the August recess.

The decision adds a twist to the Florida Senate race. Gov. Charlie Crist (R-Fla.) is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, and he would be tasked with appointing a candidate to fill the seat until Martinez's term expires in 2011.

4. Could be a health issue.
Could be a sex scandal (of course).

Could have gotten a slew of death threats for voting for Sotomayor.

I guess time will tell.

5. he's appointing a place-holder.. like Biden's replacement
Too bad they don;t just have a new election & the new guy gets 6 yrs.. That would avoid a lot of the jockeying for position:) It would take the advantage away from the governors too..regardless of party.. we had a dem gov in IL, and look how great THAT turned out:(

6. Does this mean he will have to appoint a Democrat?
After all, it would look really strange if he ran against his own appointee in the next Senate primary.

9. Governors who appoint themselves are often defeated because it reeks opportunism.
