Assume for a moment that the birthers are right
(Caveat: I do not believe what dumbass fake patriots believe but bear with me) The vast majority of Americans were so sick and freaking tired of bush, cheney, right wing radio and conservative values that they turned to a foreigner to lead them. Please lurkers take a moment for some introspection.

1. Why on earth would I assume that?
We've seen President Obama's Hawaii documents. What I assume is that they are in order and that attempts to deny that are nutbaggery.

You assume what you want. Leave me out of that, please.

2. Easy, there, buddy -- he's just saying most of us would have voted for a Martian,
we were so sick of the Bush Cheney crimes and disasters and deceits....

7. Never concede an opponent's position, even if you do it to
make an argument. I, for one, would only vote for someone qualified to hold the office of President of The United States, no matter what the situation.

Bad debating tactics, all around.

I'm your buddy? I didn't know that.

3. What?
I doubt the government would allow a guy to be president if they didn't check his credentials beforehand, right?

11. You are correct. President Obama's credentials were quite
available before the election.

And welcome to DU.

4. It would not make any difference where he was born
His mother was an American citizen and that makes him an American, no matter where on earth he was born..He happened to be born in Hawaii though.

13. Not exactly
The Constitution requires the candidate to be a natural born citizen.

To be considered legally "naturally born citizen" you must either:
a) be born inside the United States (or one of its territories)
b) have both Parents be US citizens at the time of your birth.

Don't help the birthers by giving false arguments they can knock down like strawmen.

That being said the birthers are full of it.

5. In some ways Obama is *more* American
than Bush (and the Republicans) because he tries to bring together all Americans, not just appeal to a regional or political base.

9. It still baffles me that so many republicans profess their problem to be...
the notion that the party "abandoned the conservative principles" and that nonsense. In effect, what they're saying is that the hard core conservatives have become so disillusioned at their party that they turned around and began voting democratic? It makes no fucking sense!

In reality, the party went so crazy on war, opposing abortion, opposing ANYTHING positive for gay citizens, etc... that the more moderate republicans became disillusioned and shifted to the left.

18. It'd be a hell of a constitutional carnival if it happened, either way
I'm kinda bemused at the existence of an eligibility issue at all, but Canada's requirements for becoming PM are actually less stringent than those for being elected as a Member of Parliament, and those are exactly the same as the requirements to vote at all.
