Can anyone debunk an email I received saying Obama wanted
the military to buy their own health insurance? Here's a clip from the email:

Bad press, including major mockery of the plan by comedian Jon Stewart, led to President Obama abandoning his proposal to require veterans carry private health insurance to cover the estimated $540 million annual cost to the federal government of treatment for injuries to military personnel received during their tours on active duty.

The President admitted that he was puzzled by the magnitude of the opposition to his proposal.

"Look, it's an all volunteer force," Obama complained..

"Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice? It doesn't compute...”

"I thought these were people who were proud to sacrifice for their country," Obama continued. "I wasn't asking for blood, just money. With the country facing the worst financial crisis in its history, I'd have thought that the patriotic thing to do would be to try to help reduce the nation's deficit. I guess I underestimated the selfishness of some of my fellow Americans."

Please pass this on to every vet you know and to their families.

I tried fact check and didn't find anything.

12. I just read the Snopes article. I'm sad to say I won't send it
to the vet who sent me the email! "Can't say true or false" won't make it on this one. The vet who sent it to me is a retired Marine who spent 24 years in the service, and a strong Pub. That Snopes article will just confirm his statement. DAMN!!!!

I know military families are served by insurance companies
Edited on Fri Aug-07-09 11:07 AM by havocmom
Don't know what kind of deal it is in respect to how much they pay/ how much employer (Military, ultimately the US government) pays. Figure it is probably similar to the insurance plans offered other federal employees, including Congress, where employee pays part/ employer (feds) pay part. The big difference with federal employee group insurance is the insurers cannot exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Perhaps some active duty military DUers can correct me if their plans are different. I recall that shortly after the invasion of Iraq, the data base for an insurer who covered the personnel/families at DM Air Force Base in Tucson got hacked. It pissed me off that MSM did not raise hell about it then. I worried that military families of deployed airmen could be targeted for retribution if that hacked info fell into really bad hands. MSM did not explore the security breach much at all. :banghead:

28. I know under the current system, any problem that is linked to
time served in the military is not covered by private ins. A woman I worked wioth had a hip problem that was related to her service time in the Army many years before. She tried to get meds through our employer HC and they refused. They told her to go to the VA. I have no idea if this "ins cos. can't deny coverage for pre-existing conditions will change that or not.

20. Winning entry
Don't debunk something your correspondent can't source. Tell him that with all the dissembling, distortions and disruptions being paid for right now by the health insurance industry, you're not buying his bogus "quotes" from the president without a YouTube video.

10. Where does this shit start?
Some freeper sitting in their mommy's basement, or at one of those conservative "think tanks?" It amazes me that there are so many emails making the rounds filled with lies about Dems from conservatives, yet almost none going around about Republicans. What kind of loser takes the time to make this shit up and pass it around?

I'm guessing it's a paid loser at one of those conservative "think" tanks.

.... people, Creative Response Concepts = Conservatives for patient's rights.
The truth means nothing to them.

Obama asked that bogus e-mails like this be forwarded on to the White House ....
I forget what the address is but I bet somebody on DU knows or call the White House
and ask.

26. Not a good idea
First of all there is a question of legality about collecting information like this. What is the White House going to do with the email addresses and identity of their "enemies". Create an enemies list?

Also, since new rules require the White House never to delete any records, they are now forced to store all the BS that the spammers will send forever.

All in all, it's not a good idea. Better for some non-profit group to do this collecting, and not our White House.

13. this is why a lie can get 1/2 way around the planet before the truth has a chance
to put it's shoes on... Unless you have a recording of (and the time to listen to) everything Obama has ever said, you cannot prove he did NOT say it!

It should be up to them to quote the time and place of this quote, if not consider it a lie.

On the today show just before the war in 2001-2002? pRes boosh's mother, Barbara said "I can't waste my beautiful mind thinking about those things" (referring to the deaths and body bags resulting in the invasion of Iraq.

Now if I had not heard it with my own two ears, or if it was just presented to me without any reference to where or when she said this I would have dismissed IT as bullshit.

14. Don't debunk - inform!
They know this shit is false - no reason to debunk it - they won't listen. Instead, come up with your own facts and statistics. The percentage of personal bankruptcies caused by health care costs, the increase in health care premiums over the last decade, the costs of emergency room use by the uninsured, the rising cost of deductibles, and on and on and on. use that info in a "reply all" back to the herd and fight lies with the truth.

Did you really need someone else to "debunk" this? If you did, you have a learning disability. If you didn't, you are perpetuating a ridiculous smear for no reason. Either way, knock it off.

It also makes me feel better. I understand that the CBO would offer all kind of recomentations for cost savings and many of them would be unacceptable.

Thanks

27. Just received a MOAA Legislative Update pertaining to your question, no link but text below.

President Vows to Protect TRICARE, VA

We've reported in previous columns and blogs about assurances we've received from legislators and staffers of both parties that there’s no intent to affect TRICARE or VA beneficiaries' benefits or taxes under ongoing national health reform initiatives.

President Obama called a small group of military-oriented reporters in for a White House interview this week to emphasize this point. Syndicated columnist Tom Philpott and the Stars and Stripes ran articles quoting the president as saying this effort will not diminish TRICARE or VA health benefits for service families or retirees.

"While his universal health care plan is still in flux, Obama is promising that none of the changes will affect Tricare or VA health services," according to Stars and Stripes.

We've also said you can never say "never." That's why MOAA and The Military Coalition have sent letters to every member of Congress and why MOAA has generated more than 35,000 member messages to Congress through our Web site, urging legislators to ensure military and VA health coverage isn’t curtailed or taxed under any reform bill.

On the Hill, Reps. Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Steve Buyer (R-IN) secured amendments to bills in the House aimed at ensuring those protections.

To date, we haven’t found anyone on the Hill who isn't supportive of protecting VA and TRICARE.
