Breaking News....Sen. Mel Martinez Resigns (R-FL)
Edited on Fri Aug-07-09 11:04 AM by Fla Dem

<snip>

As a US Senator, I have also had a platform to speak against the oppression of the Cuban regime and my hope for a better future for the people of Cuba. I will continue that lifelong passion in the next phase of my life.
I will always be grateful to the people of Florida for bestowing on me the singular honor of representing them in the United States Senate.

My priorities have always been my faith, my family and my country and at this stage in my life, and after nearly twelve years of public service in Florida and Washington, it's time I return to Florida and my family.

So today I am announcing my decision to step down from public office, effective on a successor taking office to fill out the remainder of my term.

<Snip>

So now does Crist appoint Jeb???

13. You think we can get a recording of Crist saying "This is f***ing golden!"?
And musing about appointing himself?

THAT would be golden! :applause: :rofl:

6. What are you missing?????
Martinez originally was not running for reelection. However, today he announced he was resigning as soon as Gov Crist appoints a replacement. There is a link in the OP with more details. Crist himself has announced he is running for the senate seat. However, while he can appoint himself to the position, there is some thinking he won't.

12. was he pressured?
Did the Powers that Be say "if you vote for Sotomayor, you'd better resign the next day"?

15. Doubt it
He announced he will not run for re-election a while back, so I doubt there were too many pressure buttons to be pressed. Just a guess, of course, but I think he ENJOYED voting for Sotomayor.

What? Did you really think warrantless wire taps were about protecting America from terrasts? Nope, just taking J. Edgar's method to the next level with the latest technology.

11. Wow.

I'm sort of guessing why, on the basis of his name being Martinez- perhaps seeing how much many of his colleagues HATE Latinos was a shock and eye-opener.

If I'm right, then they may well be paving their way for BIG trouble with Latino voters - if their attitude even lost them the support of a Republican senator.

Or is it something else entirely?

18. Carlos Watson said that Martinez hates being in the Senate
And was upset that the Republicans blocked all progress on his key issue, immigration reform. I suspect that Martinez sees how fringe the party is getting, knows he will not be able to get anything else done, and wants to give a national intro to whoever Crist appoints so they will have more credibility when they run for the seat.

What would be interesting is if Crist appointed the strongest Republican contender for Governor to the Senate. But I don't think that would work - Florida law requires that candidates resign from positions once they announce they are running. So Crist might use it to remove a weaker candidate this time around but improve their name recognition.
