John Cornyn Writes a Letter to Obama About "Fishy" Goings-On

In a letter to President Obama, Sen. Cornyn expressed serious concern about the White House's new program requesting Americans to forward email chains and other communications opposing the President's health care policies. Sen. Cornyn is seeking assurances that the program is being carried out in a manner consistent with the First Amendment and America's tradition of free speech and public discourse.

Sen. Cornyn's letter also inquires about the collection of names, email addresses, IP addresses, and private speech of U.S. citizens that will be reported, which raises the specter of a data collection program.

"I am not aware of any precedent for a President asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure political speech that is deemed ‘fishy' or otherwise inimical to the White House's political interests," Sen. Cornyn wrote. "You should not be surprised that these actions taken by your White House staff raise the specter of a data collection program. As Congress debates health care reform and other critical policy matters, citizen engagement must not be chilled by fear of government monitoring the exercise of free speech rights."

I sent him a little letter:

Dear Senator Cornyn,

Because the right-wing extremists are masters of disinformation, I'm sure our President wishes to see what lies are being passed around so he can clarify. I have to regularly debunk outright lies that are generated from right-wing think tanks and forwarded to individuals who don't look up facts for themselves. I'm sure President Obama is preparing for some public debunking addresses so that the propaganda machine can be exposed. It's as simple as that.

1. The first thing I ever learned about e-mail is, it is not private.
Cornyn needs to buy a clue.

2. Even if Cornyn bought a clue, he's not smart enough to read
the instruction manual that comes with it. So, he'd misuse his clue and it would break.

Senator Cornyn,

You are a member of a minority party that appears to be insane. I owe you nothing and that is what you will get. And there's not a damned thing you can do about it.

Your pal,
The Pres.

PS Please switch to an Earth-friendly brand of laundry detergent. ;)

16. Right,
it's A-Ok for the corporations (TPC - The Phone Company) to hand over all of their data on us and let the NSA have carte blanche in setting up wiretapping systems on their networks. But, oh noes! American citizens snitching out "fellow" American citizens? No way!

I guess he's never heard of those laws (whose exact names escape me) where snitching on a neighbor for the suspicion of criminal (or worse, terraist) activity is considered "patriotic"...

8. Obama's response ...

Dear Senator Cornyn,

Your accusations are baseless and offensive. Besides, if I wanted private information about Americans, I wouldn't have to collect it through forwarded email messages. Thanks to your support of Bush's illegal wiretapping program, his Database of American Citizens is quite extensive and I could easily access that information if I wanted to.

Sincerely,
President Barack Obama

14. Jokes Aside...
Why hasn't Obama stopped the illegal wiretapping program? I thought that would be up there with closing Gitmo.

15. Damned good question
Edited on Sat Aug-08-09 10:29 PM by texastoast
Because while I would like to give the benefit of the doubt to Obama, Bush's disgusing implementation of this warrantless wiretapping can't be dismantled too soon. If Obama continues it, he should hang with Bush (who should hang long and high for all his crimes against this nation).
