Edwards works shift at nursing home
NEW YORK - Democratic presidential contender John Edwards toiled on the early shift at the Sarah Neuman Nursing Home in Mamaroneck, a northern suburb of New York, waking patients, serving breakfast and living — for a few hours, anyway — the life of a $14-per-hour health care aide.

Edwards' visit was part of the "Walk a Day in My Shoes" campaign organized by the politically influential Service Employees International Union. In January, SEIU announced it would invite all the 2008 presidential candidates to spend a day on the job with one of its members, most of whom work in hospitals and other health care facilities.

~SNIP~

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator, joined Elaine Ellis, 58, a certified nursing assistant who has worked at the Sarah Neuman home for 18 years. Edwards stopped by Ellis' apartment for breakfast before heading to the nursing home, where they clocked in for the 6:30 a.m. shift.

Ellis, a Democrat who is undecided in the presidential contest, said she believes such work opportunities help illuminate for politicians the challenges facing the health care system and health care workers.

And while she acknowledged the event was a prime photo opportunity for Edwards, who has vigorously courted organized labor throughout his presidential bid, she said his visit will have substantive value, too.

"It shouldn't be just PR," Ellis said. "It should be to educate the people who want to make decisions in the White House about what to do when they talk about health care."

1. Excellent. It really does trouble me that Edwards is not getting..
..enough press and credit in the "Hillary vs. Obama lovefest/fight" that's dominating the discussion. I think he's much more substantive in terms of his policies and his positions, but also in terms of his life experience.

10. I'm a bit concerned
about that as well - but, there always seems to be so much "stuff" floating around Hillary and Obama - so much so that when it comes time for the primaries, people will be looking for someone that is more substantive, and Edwards is the one.

2. great idea
Are any of the other candidates doing this also? I've been kinda lukewarm about Edwards (although I did donate to his campaign), but this is a good thing, and he keeps saying he is looking out for the middle class, so I am really impressed. My favorite is Kucinich, but I think I am more progressive than most people, so don't know how far he can go.
Edwards is my new current favorite-probably will change a few times before the next 20 months are up. If Gore ran though, I would have to question that.

5. Good for Edwards--hope all the candidates choose to have similar
experiences. But $14 bucks an hour as an aide? Geez, 6 years ago, my starting wage as an RN was $15.80 an hour. Must be the diff between NY and South Dakota, LOL! Or this lady has tons of seniority.

11. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts
that she's well paid because she's in a union.

SIEU is up here, too. The health care workers who are unionized are FAR better off than those who aren't. And the care that patients receive is better, too, because workers who feel valued perform better. And while the salary budget is higher, the overall health care expenditure is less when patients don't need extra care resulting from mistakes or neglect.

as well as a union member. That being said, I think ALL healthcare workers, especially RNs, are underpaid.

7. Excellent program. What a wonderful idea.
Now how about letting a presidential candidate stay home with my three boys for a 10 hour day.

8. My mom has said for years that all candidates should
have to work at minimal jobs before they become candidates. So, here's to JE's day as a nurse's aid and to future days as a waiter in a diner--he can keep the tips or donate them to the others serving that day--and a day picking up garbage, and a day working in a dog food plant. Somebody should recommend to him a good pair of shoes for standing on your feet all day.

12. Minimum wage here too
Although ours is nearly $8.00 an hour. There are RA's and CNA's now though, so maybe they took the top end of the slightly higher CNA wage for the article because they were embarrassed to admit anyone made such crap wages in this country.

14. CNA's here average $6-7
$14? I live in metro Atlanta so there are a lot of decent jobs to be had but nursing assistants, expecially working in long term care facilities start at minimum and max out at about $9. The turnover is tremendous.

15. You couldn't begin to live on $5.15 here in the North East
I would be willing to bet your cost of living is much much lower then here. Even with 2 40 hour a week jobs at 5.15 you could not afford to live here and still eat unless you shared a small apartment with a 3 more adults doing the same.

16. worked 13 yrs
as a nurse aid, and I am impressed. I know he got the trainee treatment. Doesn't know the full scope of the job. Just being there and seeing these people. I hope he continues on to be the "people's candidate.

I have never heard a Presidential Candidate ever doing such a thing, except for one...Bobby Kennedy.

Edwards has my vote.
