Obese Inmate Sneaks Gun Into Jail in Belly Fat
HOUSTON - A nearly 600-pound man was able to hide a pistol and ammunition from Houston police and jailers for more than a day while he was in custody by stashing the gun between his rolls of fat.

"Obviously the system broke down," former Harris County Detention Major Mark Kellar said. "The procedures didn't work as they were designed to work."

Houston police said George Vera, 25, was arrested Aug. 2 and taken to the city jail. He spent a day there before being transferred to the Harris County Jail.

After being there for 14 hours, going through intake procedures, he was taken to the showers, the final step before going to his cell.

There, Vera told police he had a 9mm handgun on him, along with 2 clips.

Back in the 1970s, I worked as an orderly in a hospital x-ray department. The techs were always having to re-figure their "technique"* (term used to describe the settings of the x-ray machine for various parts of the anatomy) for large persons. But usually these patients were, maybe 50-100 pounds overweight. We never had anyone near 600 pounds, though! When the person was overweight, the x-ray would come out whitish (not enough x-rays got through) with no contrast (couldn't see bones or organs), so the tech would increase the technique until the radiologist could see what he/she was looking for.

Perhaps the same thing happened here. The guards didn't re-figure their "technique" for this particular inmate.
________
*I believe this was the term. I haven't heard it applied in an x-ray setting for several decades now, but I believe I remember conversations between x-ray techs: "Hey, this x-ray didn't come out!" "What technique did you use?" "(answers)," "Well, try (another setting, or technique)."

28. Oh gawd.
If a metal detector didn't catch it I know it's possible. My dad was a physician and when we first moved to the U.S. (sorry) he had his largest patient ever. She complained of pain... turned out she had lost an object - can't recall what it was - in a fat roll and the area had festered. I'll never forget Dad's mixture of horror and compassion.

How does an inmate manage to keep his weight at six hundred pounds, anyway? It gives credence to the metabolic disorder argument for some obesity.
