And will is be paid for through our tax dollars? Is this the same as "free health care for all" and will this raise our taxes? Asking for my Sister.

1. No
It wont be paid with taxes. Its not free health for all. Its supposed to be a self-sustaining (with premiums) non profit insurance entity with low per service payouts. Depending on the makeup on the risk pool, and the payout rates, it may have lower premiums. If it is firewalled, it could have no market impact though

2. We're already paying for everyone's healthcare...
When the uninsured clog up our emergency rooms, who do you think pays for that?

What a public option would do is put that money up front, and allow those people to see a doctor in an office setting, instead of making emergency care unavailable to those who really need it.

It will also save money in the long run because people will be able to get preventative medicine, which costs a hell of a lot less than treating a serious illness when it's full blown.

Eventually, the costs, and the taxes, will go down.

I pay as much (in percentage of income) in taxes as friends in England, then I have to pay for my health insurance on top of that. We end up getting the same thing, but I pay more for it than they do.
