Would you get married to get health care?
I've gotta admit it's crossed my mind. My live-in girlfriend (8 years) and I have both been married before, so neither of us needs the "paper". She's got good insurance from her job, and if we married I could get on the policy fairly cheap.
Maybe I'll wait and see what this Congress gives us.

When I was 17, I married to get out of my parents' house.

on edit: I forgot to mention that we divorced a year later.

4. Couldn't even if I wanted to
Unfortunately, God is in the mix when it comes to my boyfriend and I sharing healthcare.

Why does God not want us to have health insurance?

God is a lobbyist.

5. I'm getting married on Saturday...
And one of the things I'm most excited about is my fiance's insurance. I have insurance, but the deductible is so high that it's basically useless to me.

Oh and he's Canadian too, so I guess now I'll have insurance on top of insurance.

That's not why I'm marrying him, of course, but we already consider ourselves married and the insurance is probably the biggest perk of making it legal.

21. Thanks!
It sounds like we're in pretty similar situations.

I'm actually a little bit bitter that there are so many perks to be had for simply signing a piece of paper and saying some stuff in front of people. The wedding is the easy part of marriage. It's the day-to-day making each other happy (read: not killing one another) that's the hard part and we've already been doing that for a while. Just like you have.

I wouldn't marry for ANY reason.

Of course, being twice divorced, I'm a bit jaded.

9. Some people STAY married to KEEP healthcare.
A friend stayed with her abusive husband in order to keep her healthcare.

But guess what? The bum let her portion of the policy lapse -- and didn't tell her.

She finally dumped him. And to this day, she has no health insurance. And cannot get it because of pre-existing conditions. :grr:

15. I would if I were you
Sometimes the 'paper' is worth it. If you and she are in a committed relationship, why not? You could save the cost of an eventual divorce many times over.

16. Uh, you two ain't strangers.
You two actually know and like each other. So, basically, NOT marrying even though YOU LIVE TOGETHER is like the general in The Mouse That Roared who insisted that all he needed was strict observance of the Geneva Convention. So he got the tin plate in the basement cell. Meanwhile everyone else not so hidebound was living it up in luxury.

DID YOU KNOW THAT MARRIED PEOPLE GET PRESENTS THAT SINGLE PEOPLE DON'T? You should. Seriously, this is just silly.

I was thinking you meant having to marry a near stranger to save my life, which I hope it never comes to.

18. I've been mulling the idea of getting married "on paper" to get it.
I have a close friend who you could call my platonic soul mate. He's always there for me but it doesn't work as a 'relationship' (been there, done that). He has a good job, good insurance and a friend of mine keeps telling me that he should marry me 'on paper' so I can access the benefits. But I kinda doubt he'd go for it, and even if he did, that would be just when I'd finally meet the love of my life, who has eluded me all these years. lol And yes, I know it would be illegal.

Being a widow, I'm entitled to my husbands health care policy he had when he was alive. If I marry, I will lose it.

24. I was going to marry a friend of mine after 9-11. She has been here since she was 5yo
and her permanent resident papers were coming up. She had heard that they were denying everyone and was worried. I told her we could get married but we ended up not needing to. She was fine and allowed to stay. It did make her get into gear on getting citizenship though.

25. I did it in 1994 - he needed auto insurance and I needed health insurance -
I was between jobs and could not afford coverage. He had recently got his license back after a suspension. We were good friends (with benefits) and stayed married for two years. We remained good friends after our divorce also.

I would do it again if necessary.

My friends always joke my pick up line is "do you have medical insurance - what is your deductible"?

26. My friend stayed married b/c of health care benefits.
He's married to a woman who has screamed and cursed at him, hit him, threw knives at him, wouldn't let him see his newborn daughter for the first time when he came home from a business trip, and there's so much more. And he met a woman of his dreams. And he gave her up and stayed married. His wife had health care benefits with her job.

Last year, he was diagnosed with serious cardiac problems and had to undergo emergency triple bypass. And yes, b/c of her benefits, a bill of close to a quarter million dollars was a cost of $50,000+, hefty but affordable.

And in case you're wondering, his recuperation made Jack Nicholson's tussle with Nurse Ratchet seem like a kindergarten birthday party. I was concerned my friend was going to die during his convalescence. I won't go into the details, but it was horrible.

My point is you never know what you have to give up or put up with when it comes to health insurance.

27. My daughter did.
She's gay, but her friend of over 10 years said he'd marry her to help her get an operation, that her insurance wouldn't pay because they said it was a pre-existing condition. His insurance covered it without ?? They divorced within a year.

Where there was woman who was marrying a Canadian to get access to health care?

But to answer your question, I probably would.
