SAN LEANDRO — A brand-new 37-inch Sony flat screen television for $100? Great deal — until you take it out of the box and realize you just bought an oven door.

San Leandro police Lt. Pete Ballew called it a variation on the old "rocks in a box" scam, in which a box is presented as containing new, expensive electronics for sale but is actually full of rocks.

On Wednesday San Leandro police pulled over a man who had in his car a box containing what appeared to be an expensive 37-inch flat-screen television, but in actuality was a glass oven door cleverly disguised as a TV. The man is suspected of trying to sell the item for $100 in the parking lot of the San Lorenzo Wal-Mart, 15555 Hesperian Blvd.

1. Reports say he watched the blank black panel for 16 HOURS...
...before realizing he wasn't watching Fox News.

4. Well, if you can't tell the difference between a flat screen tv and an oven door...
when you are buying a tv from the back of a car in a parking lot for $100.... you deserve to get taken. I'm just sayin.

8. I doubt he let them peek inside the box first
So, no, it's not necessarily only stupidity that would lead someone to buy it, since they whole point would be tricking someone by putting something different in the box.

10. here's my point.... you are buying a flat screen tv in a parking lit
from the back of someone's car for $100.... and if they won't let you look inside..... do you see where I am going with this. which part should be setting of alarm bells??? anyone with any sense would not even consider it. i mean, at the very least it could be stolen property.... you are buying it from someone you don't even know in a parking lot.

12. They want you to assume it's stolen property
The scammers are relying on your greed for a good buy. They can be reasonably assured that you are unlikely to report it to the police, either out of embarrassment or being questioned by the police as to your motive for the purchase.

Many people who wouldn't think about stealing property, will knowingly buy stolen property.

15. This scam was pulled last summer here in Central Virginia.
Some of the fakes were quite impressive - glass black oven doors, shrinkwrapped, covered in Best Buy and manufacturers' logos, with a black, $3 universal remote tucked inside. The oversize size, depth and weight were pretty close to a real flat panel TV.

16. I hope the seller of the pet rocks is arrested.
And for $100, a 37" LCD TV -- by SONY, one of the better brands, anybody would be a damn fool to think it a good price for a new one.
