18. People who are terrified of death
Edited on Tue Aug-11-09 12:22 PM by Warpy
because they belong to a fear based religion don't want any mention at all of the fact that their lives are going to end. Writing a will leaves them depressed for weeks. It gives them no peace of mind to have their affairs settled.

They don't realize that a living will can also specify that they get everything medicine can provide as well as refusing it all. They just can't bring themselves to consider the possibility.

They just don't want to confront their mortality. Death to them means a mean old man on a cloud will judge them harshly and send them to hell.

The sillier one is the broad on the left with the anti government healthcare sign. If she's not on Medicare now, she will be very soon, by the looks of her. Now that's a fool.

51. I couldn't agree with you more.
And it was my biggest disappointment of the Town Hall.

Obama explained there were to be no death panels, and how that lie had been manufactured - from end of life discussions, but he didn't explain what a living will/advanced directive is. He used words they didn't understand and the bells didn't go off for these people. He needed to explain it to them in the terms a child would understand. They had no idea what he was talking about.

26. My mother died of a massive stroke
she was terrified of doing a living will. In fact she wouldn't. My father on the other hand did one for himself when he got ill. As was mentioned below, she was also terrified of death. The truth is both died and it wasn't much different one way or the other. Some people just can't handle death.

47. those who do not keep advance directives in place
are in callous disregard for their family's well being in that future moment of crisis. And of course, if a person does wish to have all life sustaining measures taken at the end, the only way to ensure that will be the case is by having Advance Directives. Those who desire all measures to extend life are the very ones that need these directives more than anyone.
We recently updated my Mother's, and I did in fact review them with a professional, to make sure I checked the boxes as Mom wanted them when she did them the first time. Many people would like advice on the terminology and all.
These people are idiots. Idiots who do not care for their families, I might add.

50. How stupid can one person be?
No worries, it's a rhetorical question. Every time I think I've seen rock-bottom stupid, someone comes along and proves to me that we're not there yet.

Thing is, no one is telling her that she *has to*, or even that she *should* have an end-of-life conversation with anyone. All it says is that, should you want or need to have that conversation with a physician, it will be reimbursed. And it limits how often the plan will pay for those conversations. That's it!

Good grief, these people are annoying.

What I want to do is get up in her face and say fine, don't have that conversation. Then, when you're in a wreck and the hospital is keeping you alive with breathing apparatus and feeding tubes and what-have-you, your loved ones will be left to figure it out on their own -- use extraordinary life-saving means? pull the plug? never pull the plug, just keep draining the family accounts until they've run dry? give it a year? what??? you will have given them no guidance whatsoever, therefore ensuring that your actual wishes (should you have thought it out that far) will not / cannot be followed. How considerate of you.
