Stephen Hawking: "I wouldn't be here today if it were not for the NHS."

When Investor's Business Daily http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=333933006516877 attempted to scare readers away from "socialized medicine" by claiming Stephen Hawking wouldn't be alive today if he relied on the British health care system, they neglected a couple of things:

1) Hawking does rely on the British National Health Service.
2) Hawking can speak for himself.

"I wouldn't be here today if it were not for the NHS," he told us. "I have received a large amount of high-quality treatment without which I would not have survived."

2. so when's his rebuttal op-ed going to show up in IBD?
I mean, he's shown he's far more intelligent than those who can be published in the IBD ...

5. Wait, that Investor's Business Daily piece was SERIOUS?
Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 09:44 AM by moggie
I hadn't read the article, but I'd seen a quote, and I assumed it was a parody! In fact, I thought it was a bit too obviously stupid to be good parody.

From this side of the pond, it looks increasingly like your country is gripped by a mass psychosis. We may have to ask Canada to put something in your water.

9. *Scary* "mass psychosis".
Still, is there any other kind?

I'm at a complete loss to understand why health care for all can be seen as such an awful thing. But then I've grown up with it.

6. Well, the IBD has changed the editorial, and there's a note
on the change in the editorial. Still, that doesn't change their enormous ignorance in posting it. It's typical of the misinformation being distributed by the right on this issue.

I hope their embarrassment grows as this story makes headway around the world. Morons!

10. They only edited out the Hawking part?
That entire editorial is nothing but prevarication.

Are they serious?

11. So did I
NHS is one of the best thing Britain has going for itself, at one point though, the Conservatives
wanted to dismantle it and turn it into privatized industry, they where kicked out of power and
are still trying to get back in, just goes to show how the Brits feels about their NHS.
