High-Fat Diet May Make You Stupid and Lazy
This may explain the birther/freeper/etc.

A new study on rats finds that 10 days of eating a high-fat diet caused short-term memory loss and made exercise difficult. While the finding may not seem a big surprise, the researcher say it might suggest that high-fat diets make humans lazy and stupid.

Murray and colleagues studied rats fed a low-fat diet (7.5 percent of calories as fat) and rats fed a high-fat diet (55 percent of calories as fat). Muscles of rats eating the high-fat diet for four days were less able to use oxygen to make the energy needed to exercise, causing their hearts to worker harder - and increase in size.

After nine days on a high-fat diet, the rats took longer to complete a maze and made more mistakes in the process than their low-fat-diet counterparts.

1. I've been on a low fat diet since Jan. '08. I've lost over 90 lbs, and
I've never felt better.

3. Some people don't thrive on a low-fat diet. Some people do.
Congrats on the 90 lbs-that's great! :toast:

2. What kind of fat were they fed? Man-made 'trans-fats' or real fat from oils/meat?
High glycemic (carb) diets make people fat and lazy. BTW rats aren't people-we have a different metabolism.

6. Sorry, that thing about high carb diets making one lazy is a complete myth.
I've dropped 39 lbs. in 7 weeks, with not a whole lot of exercise, following a plant-based, starch centered diet where over 75% of the calories are from carbohydrates and there is to be no added oil whatsoever. I consume no meat or dairy at all. My meals are widely varied, I now have more energy than I'm physically capable of burning off at this time, and I sleep an average of 6 hours per day whereas I was closer to 12 hours before the diet change. Because the foods I eat are so calorie sparse, it's nearly impossible for me to top 1,500 calories in a day. I eat what I need to when I want it and am almost never hungry.

Oh, and my blood sugar is coming down as is my blood pressure, to the point where I'm no longer on drugs for hypertension. I still need to lose around 50% of my present body weight but I feel better than I have in at least 10-15 years. All of these benefits can be enjoyed by anyone, whether they're super-morbidly obese or of normal weight.

7. I'm doing about 800g of carbs and an avg of 25g of fat a day..
I might only lose 5 pounds a month. But over time, it adds up. I'm eating foods I enjoy, I look great and feel like my old self again. I did Atkins for years. It's really hard to not eat carbs. Now I eat plenty of carbs, including sweets, and occassionally fast food. It's all a matter of balance. You wouldn't believe what I eat. I just cut down on the dairy and oils, and eat less meat, not zero meat. I have it down to a science. ;)

14. Of course you lose weight on a low-cal diet.
I lost weight on a high-fat diet, and because I was so full, it was around 2000 calories a day. Again, to each his own.

10. Please don't tell me you think all people on our side are thin.
Because I'm here to tell you, weight has nothing to do with it. You will find people of all weights and shapes who are stupid, and who are smart.

It's not OK to stereotype all freepers as fat, or all heavy people as freepers.

11. Of course not, but the freepers do have an advantage on that side - and it is by choice.
Idiots tend to gravitate toward fast food. For whatever reason, they seem to be getting the large loud people out in front, and that's just observation. The entire Astroturf mob thing is disgusting, but the sick irony is that the very people who are being fucked by the current system are the ones complaining about the non-existent "new plan" for EXACTLY the same reasons that the current system is fucking them!

16. I'm large, too
Of course, I guess this means I'm a Freeper, huh? :sarcasm:

I'd rather be the size I am, and take the life lessons it's afforded, than be normal weight and spend my days making snap judgments and assumptions about people who are being used by those on the other side of the aisle. Most of their opinions are likely formed due to a variety of circumstances, not the foods they prefer to eat.

>Idiots tend to gravitate toward fast food.<

Oh, and there's never been anyone standing in line at McDonald's who was normal weight and had an advanced degree, huh?

Yay! More fat bashing at DU -- I can almost set my watch to it! :woohoo:

Really?

Not all overweight people are Republicans. Jesus.

13. Get a grip
Nothing was mentioned about weight. It just said lazy and stupid which defines a freeper type.
I'm not even close to skinny and I thought the article amusing in terms of brain function, not size.

17. And all the photos we've seen posted of those "lazy and stupid" types
are invariably fat, aren't they?

Of course, it's okay to make fun of someone else's weight or appearance if they're a Freeper. Then it's a-OK, isn't it?

:sarcasm:

18. You know the science emerging on this is amazing
also I read (actually bought) the Time story on exercise, and it makes some sense

In the next ten years or so I do expect a small revolution in what we do or say about all of this. By the way that includes the marketing of food as well.
