A person possibly suspected of threatening the White House led police on a chase from Westchester to West Los Angeles today then holed up inside a car near the Westwood federal building, prompting a standoff that forced the evacuation of a nearby apartment building.

Citing an anonymous law enforcement official, the Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site that the person was wanted for questioning by federal authorities for allegedly making an unspecified threat against the White House. Broadcast reports also indicated that the person may have been wanted on a misdemeanor warrant.

At least four police cruisers blocked the red Volkswagen Beetle in the driveway of a parking lot on Veteran Avenue just south of Wilshire Boulevard. Officers stood nearby with their guns pointed at the vehicle, and a police robot wheeled its way next to the driver's side door as the standoff continued. A military-style armored vehicle was also brought to the scene and was parked near the vehicle.

A Westchester man suspected of making a threat against the White House poses no danger, but sometimes becomes loud and profane when he fails to take his medication for mental illness, his neighbors said today.

"The guy is harmless, but once he gets off his meds he is screaming profanity," said one neighbor.

Neighbors and his mother identified the man as Joe Moshe, 56. Moshe fled from U.S. Secret Service agents and Los Angeles police officers Thursday, leading a chase in a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle up the San Diego (405) Freeway.

He stopped near the Federal Building in Westwood and is engaged in a standoff with law enforcement officers.

Asked why her son might threaten the President Barack Obama, 90-year-old Julia Moshe said, "I don't know. He is a sick man. Depressed."

I watched the raw news feed for like four hours -- it was just a little bit more than your usual LA car chase.
