DU, I'm leaving.
I have posted endlessly about stem-cell research. Every time it came up for an important vote, I tried to get you to call your congresscritters. I've watched as my posts sink to the bottom like rocks while the newest "Imus Nicole's pet food baby" thread rises like a hot air ballooon.

No to mention, the endless threads about how many threads there are on another popular topic. If I wanted high school, well, I'm too old, but anyway.

I've had enough of you ignoring important issues and endlessly enjoying debating whether Imus Nicole's baby is worthy of commenting on and counting the number of threads regarding the issue.

My husband's in Prague, I'm sitting here because I have contractors in and out of the house, I have no TV, and all I hear about is how awful it is that we are debating Imus' racist remarks while MY pet issue is left to die.

Thanks, it's been fun.

I'll probably see you after dinner. I happen to LOVE everything that's wrong about DU as much as I love everything that is right about it. It's great information and very entertaining and it keeps me sharp, even the poo fights! :hi:

(Let's see how many read to the end...)

69. Actually, it is a serious problem here on the site
And I'm not being sarcastic. Sound, important discussion topics on GD and GD-P are often buried by an avalanche of pointless copycat threads (the thousand Imus threads, for example). If that isn't "disruption", then nothing is.

Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 08:40 PM by in_cog_ni_to
as S5 would have and S5 had only 64 votes which is NOT veto proof.:( The S30 bill is veto proof, but useless as far as stem cell research goes.

From StemPAC:

More than 5 long years into President Bush's short-sighted, cruel policy restricting stem cell research, America once again has the chance to reverse it -- and strike a blow for hope.

Several weeks ago, the House of Representatives passed a bill to overturn President Bush's restrictions. The Senate is expected to vote on this bill, Senate Bill 5, within days.

Although stem cell research has bipartisan support, "pro-death" activists are working hard to torpedo this bill, and take hope away from millions of Americans. Some Senators have even put up another bill, S 30, called the "The Hope Offered through Principled, Ethically-Sound Stem Cell Research Act." The problem is -- it actually imposes additional restrictions on stem cell research. In short, it's a crock. But some senators apparently think their constituents are so stupid that they'll fall for a warm fuzzy title. In short, they think you're a moron.

Senate Bill 5 is the real deal. Senate Bill 5 is the stem cell bill supported by doctors, researchers, and patient advocates across the nation. Please write your Senators today. Tell them to support Senate Bill 5. And tell them -- you are not a moron.

Some times one or the other takes a back seat while we Seize the Moment to get some traction!

35. Sorry about your decision
For me (not a life sciences guy) the issue of stem cell research is very difficult to understand. BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT'S NOT IMPORTANT!

It could be that people simply have nothing they can say about it. But that does not mean they are not interested. Like anything else, it seems the simple emotionally stimulating stuff get the most response. And then it may be that not enough are sufficiently educated on the issue to give any meaningful response (fear of being flamed).

For me, and I'm talking about me, not you, as Gerard Hoffnung would say, DU has been very educational and I have learned a great deal since I have been here. In your case, you may be a bigger giver than taker.

Instead, President Bush has said he will use his veto power for the very first time,
and block this good bill from becoming the law of the land in order to placate his
allies on the radical right.

That is why I am asking you to email President Bush now, urging him to sign this critical
bill and give new hope to millions of Americans. We cannot allow the radical right to
stand in the way of scientific progress that offers a cure for diseases that afflict
millions of our fellow Americans.

from Center for American Progress Action Fund www.americanprogressaction.org

Talking Points Stem Cell Facts

April 10, 2007

Today, the Senate has a chance to help and provide hope to those suffering from debilitating
ailments all over the country, as it will reconsider the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act,
which was vetoed by President Bush last year. Currently, 65 percent of Americans approve of
"medical research using embryonic stem cells" and nearly 60 percent support "increasing federal
funding for embryonic stem cell research."

Hope you had a great dinner!! ;)

45. FWIW...I've posted many times about stem-cell research...
I've made the calls, I've written the letters, I've tossed into the ring, a lot of time and effort.

But when I see morons in the senate, taking up good time to explain they are not scientists, but insist on trying to act like one to push for amniotic research, I get disgusted. The RW still holds a couple of cards on the issue, and I can't wait till they play them so we can have some good debate and laws for the the good of the people.

All I can do is keep pushing...we'll get there, and perhaps we can end some of the scourges of humanity once and for all...O8)

71. That was kind of my point. If I got too PO'ed, I'd just slink away
without an announcement (I have done that, but DUs like a train wreck--I gotta watch even when i know it's nnot good for me!)

74. I'm glad you would just go away quietly. I would too. I don't see
DU as a train wreck, and believe me, I've gotten into quite a few heated siacussions here. But you know what? Every time I hear someinteresting thing on TV, orsome radio show that I think is really GREAT, the first thing I think of doing is to post something here! I honestly feel we really are a community or a neighborhood of sorts. Weare all over the globe but most of us feel similarly onthe important stuff. I live in Ga. and I sure can't talk to my neighbors like I can here. They'd try to kick me out of my house! DU is my second home, and I can't even imagine leaving.

58. Ouch, now you got my attention
Now I agree there are times I am totally lost here in subject matter its almost like :wtf: is going on, and its a bit frightening as well, but I cherish the vast insightfullness and opinions here, and am aware as well that these subjects that go off on tangents are encouraged distractions as well, I just ignore it all it goes away like a fart in the subway (always hoping)and it does, unfortunately it only masks real shit elsewhere  but collectively we do bring change for the good here and you along with the rest of us! Peace

59. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
I too have posted about Stem Cell issues as well as other important issues that just disappear here. I agree it is extremely frustrating. But, I couldn't leave it either (except for the occasional meal).

61. I really understand
As a biologist I really do try to post on the stem cell posts when I see them. Part of the problem is some of us (and I am definitely including myself) who would have much to contribute sometimes frequent other forums, like the science forum, more than GD.
I think you definitely are posting good important info.
PS my dad has Parkinson's so this is a really important to me personally as well.

64. A few things:
1) Posting a thread in favor of stem cell research is kind of like saying "I oppose chopping the heads off of folks who have outstanding parking tickets". Of COURSE most people will agree with you! The fact that your threads don't get kicked is because you're not saying anything that is either contested or controversial. I'm sorry that your threads, however correct, don't get enough responses to feed your ego.

2) "Goodbye DU" threads are self-serving and worthy of ridicule. See the above responses.

3) If you REALLY wanted to leave DU, you'd ask Skinner to delete your account. He's usually very willing to accommodate that type of request.

4) If you're looking for attention, post a cat-thread in the Lounge. Many people will reply "Awwwwwww. nice kitty!", and your thread will stay on the front page for a week or so.

81. In a way, DU has become like the MSM
There's always a story of the day, and nothing else matters.

Except the difference is that our story of the day is important.

(You know I am right there with you on stem-cell research:hug: )

84. Somebody must have called . . . it passed.
Sadly not a veto-proof majority, but the minds of those who vote "no" on this will probably never change. The people who occupy their seats will change though.
