This is a word that does not demean the people who it's aimed at, but rather, those who use it. I was talking to an older guy who used that word once when he was talking to me (never used it again around me after that), and he may has well have grown a 2nd head. I just never respected him or considered him a decent person after that.

The blatant racism displayed by your dispatcher Anita Malachowski has surely and unfortunately hurt your standing in the community and in the country. It doesn't matter what she thinks as a citizen or even that she's evidently a bigot, but when she represents a police department, it matters much more than if a citizen were spreading ugly racism. It matter because one wonders how she responds professionally to crimes being perpetrated against blacks or any other group she deems inferior in your city. Surely this has hurt the entire police department by diminishing any trust you may have built with the community.

I used your format and added a different starting text:

A police dispatcher has a crucial job, one that can mean life or death for the police and the community. How can the public (specifically the black public) trust them, knowing they feel that way?

They used workplace computers to send the e-mail.

As offensive as I personally find it, I support their right to privately send messages like this, regardless of their occupation.

Racism makes me lose perspective. I would not want to be fired just for my views, but if I used my work computer to exchange controversial ideas, I could understand it being frowned upon.

Often, public servants have clauses in their employment contracts that prohibit certain activities on OR OFF duty.

If they're in violation of those clauses, they are in breach of contract. They can also most likely be disclipined for improper use of the computers at work.


...and while I'd support action against them based on these possible violations, their communications are still (rightfully) protected as free speech.

Look, I agree that it's sick and disgusting and it makes me sick to think that anyone connected with a police dept. would do this. And I'm also getting mighty tired of hateful racism and demeaning discrimination, etc., etc. HOWEVER. Unless they openly advocate and/or incite violence at a workplace, or unless they openly express such views to customers or harass co-workers, etc., etc., what they think in private has, and should have, nothing to do with their being able to keep a job or not. If it did, a lot of us with liberal views contrary to whatever our bosses may think would be in real trouble, or those with conservative views and liberal bosses would be in a lot of trouble. Both are equally wrong.

The main and crucial difference here is that she used her official WORK computer to send this, very likely a violation and a serious breach of policy. THAT is why she should be shit-canned, not for her views themselves. And not only that, but anyone dumb enough to use her work computer to send something like this I don't want working in a police dept. in any capacity.

Both e-mail accounts have been suspended.

North Canton Mayor David J. Held said “racial stereotypes, racial slurs of any kind are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in my administration.” Held said both dispatchers will receive due process, but added: “If there is a finding, they will not be part of my administration.”
