Stars & Stripes letter to editor: "Logic" only lengthens war
There haven't been as many noteworthy Stripes letters post-election as there were prior to. Those in the military family were probably waiting for the 110th Congress to be sworn in and are now taking a wait/see as they exhale their sigh of relief. The excerpted letter below, written by an Army Sgt., blasts a Marine Sgt. who calls those in the military opposing the war "cowards."

‘Logic’ only lengthens war

In reference to “Questions for ‘cowards’” (letter, Jan. 22), my eyes are absolutely killing me from repeatedly rolling in exasperation at the complete nonsensical argument this Marine sergeant helps perpetuate.

<cut>

Espousing this ridiculous “I’d rather fight them over here” logic serves only to protract the war by throwing fuel on the flames. We will, indeed, be fighting them there; pointlessly and through unabated suffering for God knows how many years, as long as thinking (i.e. nonthinking) like this is mistaken as a legitimate point in the debate.

Furthermore, Veterans for Peace members are no more guilty of shaming their services and families than ill-informed servicemembers who sustain such harmful illusions to, presumably, effect their own personal validation.

Sgt. Brian C. Bridges
Wiesbaden, Germany

3. What do you think of this one?
I'd be interested in your opinion on "Mourning a doctor who improved Iraq."

4. Col. Allgood was an example of what a good commander should
be. The CiC is a bad example. It's sad when the world loses a man like Col. Allgood because a man like Bush lied!

5. This is why our presence in Iraq is untenable.

If Iraq had been a threat to the US, the loss of life would be acceptable. But it was never a threat, and yet, the US is losing top leadership, with years of training/experience, paid for by the taxpayers. What is the return benefit? Lowered recruitment quotas.

BTW, Gates was in Ur, too, northwest of Basra, south of Baghdad, on the 19th. The Brits told him they were scaling back their presence in Iraq, and the Iraqi leadership was there to discuss their filling in. Command Sgt. Maj. Gabbard's job was a liaison between the countries' militaries.

If you're dead, you're dead, but I still wonder if Gates had met with any of them on his visit. Reports say that info about his trip and the crash itself is unusually sketchy.

On edit: At least Newsweek is bothering to ask, finally, "Is it worth it?"

6. And Bush and Rummy have fired all the best officers and

placed their yes men and cronies(flunkies)in their places...same blunders Hitler made. The Nazis ended up with an unschooled, insane corporal running their military and look what it cost the German people. Now we have an insane deserter, who couldn't pass his drug tests in the TANG, playing GI Joe dress up games, like Hitler and Saddam once did and running our military into the ground and planning(threatening)to attack yet another country, when we can't even begin to control the countries he's already raided and wrecked. WE are in what the Army calls, "A WORLD OF SHIT!"

Congress needs to IMPEACH Cheney and Bush...yesterday...for the good of ALL mankind.

BTW the fool that wote the letter in the OP couldn't be more bass-akward...Logic is trying to end the war, a fool is trying to go on sending troops.

7. The same tactic that has been used over here
on my job. My top bosses received raises from the Bushies and have set about destroying the institution we work for. That's why it's so essential for a dem president, so this layer of GOP greed and mutual butt-covering can be excised.

BTW, I enjoy reading your analyses.

8. Bush rewards ass kissers and liars and the rest can go to hell...
This has infected the US Government from top to bottom, from the inside out! I honestly believe that Bush and Cheney want to see this country crash and burn.
