Yes, I know it is far more complicated than I am about to make it. But as a shorthand, where are you on a scale of:

-10 (far left) <--------> 0 (middle) <--------> +10 (far right)

You can reply with simply a number (-5 .... or +3 .... etc.) or a number and a comment.

We read and count from left to right

If the center is Zero, then anything to the left is (mathematically) negative and anything to the right is (mathematically) positive.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

Incredible ..... :eyes:

edit to add ...... thanks for the unrec

24. Defining Left and far-left by whose standards?
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 03:24 PM by Ian David
What the corporate media describes as "far-left" is actually dead-center centrist.

Here are some things I do not believe in, which are defined by the media (and perhaps by consensus) as far-left:

I do not believe in banning guns, but I do believe in some gun control.
I do not believe in legalizing all drugs. I do not advocate legalizing recreational marijuana, but I do support decriminalizing it and putting medical marijuana through the same sort of clinical trials and drug approval process as any other drug.
I am 100% in favor of Affirmative Action in the educational system. However, I am not entirely convinced that we should have quota-based affirmative action in the workplace. But I do think we need to have anti-bias protections and non-quota-based affirmative action in the work place.
I recognize the right of Israel to exist as part of a two (or three) state solution.
I believe that many of the things that are privatized should be "socialized," (for example, health care, The FAA, Food Safety, etc.) but I am not a "socialist," nor do I think that "pure socialism" and "communism" are actually "to the left" of the political spectrum, but are actually just Fascism (far-right) with different ideas on how to handle religion and money.

Those things above might give me points away from the "far-left" of the spectrum. Depending on how you score things.

Otherwise, I am solidly left-leaning on all other issues.

But there are a few things where I lean farther-left than most. For example.

I am in favor of Marriage Equality (gay marriage) which is a center-left ideal. However, I want to go even FARTHER than that. I am in favor of The Separation of State and Marriage. I believe that the government should ONLY issue Civil Unions for EVERYONE (gay or straight) and stop calling what Town Hall does "marriage." You should get a marriage certificate from a house of worship if you want one, which carries no legal authority or weight. You get a Civil Union from The State which carries no religious meaning or weight.

I want all of that "god" stuff out of our city halls, off our money, and out of The Pledge. The only time a chaplain should be invited to give a prayer in Congress or City Hall is when they are invited by surviving members of recently deceased civil servant's family, to offer non-sectarian comfort in the tradition the deceased followed. There should not be a paid position of "chaplain" in any government office, aside from the military. Military chaplains' sole purpose should be to serve the needs of those already adhering to their sect.

I think prostitution should be legalized, taxed, and highly regulated. Start with making it legal to visit a prostitute, but only on your birthday.

I am in favor of public financing of elections, instant run-off voting, ending corporate personhood, and imposing The Corporate Death Penalty on companies that actively work against the public good.

I am in favor of phasing-out legalized use of tobacco. Every year, we should raise the minimum smoking age by one year, until you have to be over 200 years old to smoke cigarettes. Or until we find a way to cure all the diseases smoking causes.

I am against mandatory seatbelt and helmet laws for adults- but in favor of mandatory organ donations for those killed while not wearing a helmet or seatbelt.

I only disagree on the seat belt stuff.

26. It is really impossible unless you determine methodology
Nobody who is not a politically naive idiot has opinions on all issues which are equally distributed amongst traditional left and right positions. Anybody who is always on the leftmost or always on the rightmost side has no ability to think for themselves. It could surely be possible to come up with a composite or weighted mean score but to make these meaningful you'd have to spell out the issues you wanted included.

Real world example from myself.

If you want to include the issues, say, of free trade, gun control, gay rights, reproductive choice, health care and military involvement I'd assign myself a 4,2, -8, -8, -10 and -2 ranking subjectively for an overall ranking of

-4. Looks fairly mainstream Democratic to liberal Democratic segment

If you wanted to add in the death penalty and unions I'd have to rate myself at 6 on each which would bring me to an aggregate rating of

-1.5 Now I'm going far closer to the moderate/undecided/lean Democrat side

But add in issues like religious influence on politics and sexual politics and I'm a -10 on both which would make me

-3.2 again going back into the middle of the safe to liberal Democratic side.

You can't just say add in ALL issues because nobody's list of all issues would be the same.

Overall I'm guessing I'd end up somewhere between -2 and -3, but that's with my assessment of what issues to include, guaranteed to be different and therefore not comparable to others.

Just click "Take the test" on the left. It is several pages long, but I think fairly accurate. To roughly translate my results with this post, I would be about a -9.

This is a British test so it may not exactly translate into our politics. It is interesting to see where the 2008 US Presidential candidates are on the plot:
