I don't know my blood type, my cholesterol count, or my blood pressure.

That feels like a ripoff.

1. so basically you are paying someone else to make you afraid to go to the doctor
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 05:15 PM by angstlessk
hell, save that $265 and just be afraid free?

on edit: IF you exceed that $5,000 in one year, you will probably either lose your job or enough of your income so you can no longer afford to pay that $265 per month?

I have one from work that is better.

It is a ripoff.

4. we pay around
$500 a month for our family..the care is good when I can afford to go. I have to let some bills get paid late to keep the insurance and if they raise the rates in Jan , like they do every year, I am not sure how will afford it.

5. my family pays $1405 a month for COBRA
we are tapped out

Prior to that, we had a $6,ooo yearly deductible, a $700 monthly payment, and even then they only covered 80% of "covered treatments". We ended up paying everything out of pocket anyway. Avoided medical treatment because of the out-of-pocket.

The insurance leeches won and we lost. Many time over.

To hear that even the WH is now backpedaling on the Public option is making me stark raving mad :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:  There is no hope for the future.

19. no choice, husband had cancer and we learned our lesson
Never, ever, ever be caught without medical insurance or you may die. Our savings are gone. Hopefully new insurance will kick in in October.

In the meantime, Principal/PHCS (insurer), enjoy your profits!!!

10. OMG. That is AWFUL.
We should nationalize the insurance companies and/or turn them all into non-profits. They shouldn't be allowed to do any more than cover their costs.

17. $1700/month for a family of 6 here.
Thankfully we have another 5 months of being subsidized through the stimulus deal. When that is up, we're going to have to sell some things to keep us covered. That doesn't include any co-pays or yearly deductibles (can't remember what those are off hand).

12. When I lived in Canada...
I payed nothing... no co-pays...100% coverage for medical, cradle to grave, Chose my own doctor, actually less wait times, Dental, vision and prescription through the Union was 20% co-pay, 100% for fillings and minor dental. Baffles me why everyone in the USA wouldn't want this....My Mom has had 3 arm surgeries, 1 hip replacement, numerous internal surgeries, and a knee replacement in the last ten years.... free.

13. We have the same policy....
Nearly $600 per month for the 2 of us. It's BC/BS now called 'Anthem' Blue Cross in CA.

And don't forget, that $5,000 deductible is per year! If you need ongoing treatment for something, you have to fork over another $5k when your anniversary date hits. It covers no meds whatsoever either.

Needless to say, we haven't had any 'routine' tests or preventative care for years.

15. I pay around $60/month and have zero deductible...
... and I'm covered for everything. Nor will I have my premiums raised simply because I use the system. Nor will I risk EVER being cut off.

Oops, I forgot to mention, I don't live in the US.

16. Does this work in a nation of 300 million instead of 30 million?
Does the coverage model break down at some inflection point?

Or do the economies of scale actually improve with a larger census?

24. No, just the opposite...
... even with private insurance, the larger the number of people paying in, the better (in theory) the rates should be for everyone.

18. You pay the first $8,180.00 and then pay 20% ..rip-off
UNLESS you get some horrific illness or are in a devastating accident.

If you have no "assets" that could be seized, you might be better off using the ER and the county hospital :(

And you all could too, but single-payer isn't incremental enough in nature for you all. Its impossible. It will never happen this year. Not in this climate. Its not practical. We don't have the votes. ETC...

28. Well, it was the only way I could get it
Because I knew that even the Democrats in America wouldn't really ever be for it if they had the power (which they do now). And instead of them being held responsible for it, all the excuses in the book are doled out by supporters (voters). Fine, enjoy your status quo.

But hell...who am I to say anything. I wouldn't fight anyway for it here. But it certainly was a fight going somewhere to get it. I simply felt I spent my energy most efficiently, and staying would of been futile.

29. I'm not criticizing you for leaving
I'm saying its not an option for everyone. I think I have enough points to get to Canada, but most people do not.

I do think single payer is feasable on a state level and I think states in the west coast and northeast could enact single payer plans within the next few years.

But when I said "And you all could too"....I didn't mean by immigrating. Unfortunately, as long as everyone is convinced its some magical, long-off, impossible venture, I will agree that it will never happen.

32. I pay $350/mo. for a $5K deductible, 80-20 plan
I shudder to think what that premium would be if I had any pre-existing conditions.

The whole thing is a pathetic joke. I carry around this stupid BC/Anthem card that pays for nothing - every freakin' thing is 100% out of pocket for me. One of the big reasons I keep it is if anything should happen to me, I'm terrified of being dumped in the nightmarish county hospital where they discard all the uninsured patients. I've spent countless hours there with a disabled family member and it is truly HELLISH.

I can't even begin to express my anger and disgust at the direction things appear to be headed. Don't even bother calling this a civilized country - we're a nation that leaves it's own citizens to die if they can't pay up.
