Administration Officials Walk Back Sebelius Comments

Administration Official: "Sebelius Misspoke."

An administration official said tonight that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius "misspoke" when she told CNN this morning that a government run health insurance option "is not an essential part" of reform. This official asked not to be identified in exchange for providing clarity about the intentions of the President. The official said that the White House did not intend to change its messaging and that Sebelius simply meant to echo the president, who has acknowledged that the public option is a tough sell in the Senate and is, at the same time, a must-pass for House Democrats, and is not, in the president's view, the most important element of the reform package.

A second official, Linda Douglass, director of health reform communications for the administration, said that President Obama believed that a public option was the best way to reduce costs and promote competition among insurance companies, that he had not backed away from that belief, and that he still wanted to see a public option in the final bill.

"Nothing has changed.," she said. "The President has always said that what is essential that health insurance reform lower costs, ensure that there are affordable options for all Americans and increase choice and competition in the health insurance market. He believes that the public option is the best way to achieve these goals."

A third White House official, via e-mail, said that Sebelius didn't misspeak. "The media misplayed it," the third official said.

The Atlantic Article

Keep the pressure up. Every time an official "misspeaks" about the public option, the outrage has to grow to insure there will be a public option.

1. yup
usually when they "misspeak", it's because they didn't anticipate the result

4. Or they're trial ballooning
if the outrage is less than the last time there was a "misspeak", then support is waning. If it's stronger outrage, then support is increasing.

5. I take them at their word when they make statements
So I emailed four times and called the White House switchboard twice today over Sebelius' comments.

6. I was wondering when this statement would happen. What if.....
they did this to see what the response would be from the base?

8. That's what I figure it is
It was a trial balloon to see if they could get away with throwing the public option under the bus.

I'm also figuring the outrage was worse this time than last because the last time Sebeleius made a comment on a Sunday press the meat show that looked like they were giving up on a public option, it was Monday before they walked it back.

We have to be even more outraged every time this balloon gets floated.

7. How the hell could the
Secretary of Health and Human Services have misspoken on and issue this important? Perhaps that is why we haven't seen her more often out front on this issue.

10. Two words
Trial Balloon.

They've got problems with four or five Senators and the public option.

Basically, they're between a rock and a hard place because they sold the public option compromise to the base who wanted single payer, and now they've got blue dog Senators who are balking over a public option.

They need to lay down the law to the blue dogs, vote for cloture and against the bill if you have a problem with a public option.

11. Yep these dogs that oppose it
must be simply made to let the bill get to the final vote. If they want to earn their millions and vote against it - so be it. But there has to be a vote. And if they prevent that - we need to do all we can to turn them into full time lobbyists.

12. Hopefully we can actually
steal a couple Republican votes in the senate--I heard on Maddow's show that Sen. Cao is thinking about casting a vote for the other side of the aisle.

19. Cao is not a Senator
HE's a representative.

In the House, the PRogressive Caucus has determined any bill without a public option will get voted down.

16. The following quote from the article could not paint a better picture of this whole process.
"This official asked not to be identified in exchange for providing clarity about the intentions of the President."

17. It just keeps getting worse.
I would be laughing if I didn't need Health Care so badly.

Ever play 3-Card Monty on an urban street corner?
I'm getting the same feeling.
