After my divorce I lost my health insurance (covered under ex hubby). I applied to Blue Cross/Blue Shield for a minimal personal policy for protection against catastrophic illness ($500 deductable). I have taken Prozac for mild depression in the past and had been on it when I applied (getting a divorce can be stressful and depressing). Anyway I explained I've never had any major problems with depression, just take a couple of Prozac a day, it lifts the fog. I'm not disabled from the depression, I've never been suicidal or been hospitalized for depression. It's just a mild/moderate thing that is very easily controlled with meds. Well...I was DENIED of course. I did get a policy through Unicare but of course they won't cover anything that has to do with the pre-exisiting condition. I pay $250 a month out of pocket and get 70% coverage after my $500 deductable for anything else though. Not great but better than nothing. Recently I went to get my Prozac prescription renewed. Nearest network doctor was an hour away. Had to take off a half a day of work. For the 5 minutes it took the doctor to talk to me and write the prescription, I was billed $100 (which of course I have to pay out of pocket). Considering I bring in about $1000 a month from my minimum wage job (cuz there's nothing else out there right now, no one's hiring), $100 is a lot of money, (add in gas and lost income and we're probably talking another $100). Plus I have to pay for meds out of pocket too (luckily I found I can get the $4 deal at Walmart even though I hate Walmart to the core of my being, I must patronize them for this). So that's my story, no, not a horror story but it's just another example of a hard working person whose hard earned money is going down the toilet because if this fucked health care system we have.
