Most health industry players would win under overhaul
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 08:38 AM by steven johnson
It turns out that the major healthcare industry players will do just fine with the proposed new reforms they were involved in crafting -- hospitals, insurers, drug companies, doctors, nursing homes -- will all be protected to some extent with the changes.

WASHINGTON — When Congress and the White House began talking about a health care overhaul, the industries that profit from the $2.5 trillion system were understandably nervous.

But as the legislation takes shape, it appears much of the anxiety was misplaced. Most of the major health care players, including hospitals, health insurers and pharmaceutical companies, are likely to benefit - some handsomely - over the long term.

The hospitals did quite well for themselves," said Sheryl Skolnick, a hospital analyst with CRT Capital Group in Stamford, Conn.

A proposed individual health insurance mandate has strong House and Senate support. The mandate along with subsidies to help low-income Americans pay for coverage, could bring insurers tens of millions of new customers.

2. OK - WHO ARE THE *LOSERS*??? (I wonder...)

NO 'REFORM' IS MEANINGFUL WITHOUT *CUTTING* THE INCOME *AND* PROFITS. WHERE ARE THE INCOME AND PROFITS REDUCED?

As far as I'm concerned the measure of success for any GOVERNMENT plan would be how much SOME group LOSES.

What we need is something on the order of breaking up Standard Oil or AT&T - *NOT* REQUIRING THE PEOPLE TO MAKE PAYMENTS TO PRIVATE INSURERS!!

If "everyone" wins, then seriously, why didn't they (the insurance companies, hospitals, etc) just do it THEMSELVES? No one's going to convince me that Senators have some special insight into health care efficiency that providers lack.

We know what the big problem is. The media is ALL OVER the death committies but not THE BIG PROBLEM.

It's the 'VIG' ( http://www.majorwager.com/guide/sports-gambling-vig.htm ) that's going to the insurance companies.

The 'conversation' should be turned to INSURANCE COMPANY PROFITS. How we can cut 20% right off the top of health care costs IMMEDIATELY and not changing *ANYTHING* *ELSE* (yet) by having SINGLE PAYER.

3. The inability to institute real reform...
...is the sine qua non of a corrupt society in decline. This is the equivalent of so called credit card reform which doesn't establish rates for usury.

4. I'd be perfectly FINE with health industry players making money off this...
...as long as we ended up with better and cheaper coverage.

But it seems like it's one of those either/or deals...

The numbers are a guess, but I don't think it's far off.
