GM Plans a Compact for $4,000
Leaner and meaner and teenier is the coming trend in the future of automobile manufacture.

Text
General Motors Co. is targeting the emerging ultra-low-cost car market with plans for a compact for around $4,000, possibly producing it in Asia.

The segment is attracting increasing attention from manufacturers eager to keep sales momentum in developing markets following the sharp slide in car sales in North America and Western Europe.

GM Plans a Compact for $4,000

"When Tata Motors in India came out with their $2,500 Nano vehicle, it put a lot of auto makers on the spot," said Nick Reilly, GM's newly installed executive vice president, international operations.

Tata started shipping the much-hyped Nano to domestic customers in July, with a base price of just under $3,000, and executives have talked of selling versions of the car in the U.S., Europe and emerging markets over the next two or three years.

GM already makes micro minivans with Chinese partners that it plans to export, and is looking to expand that product range. Reilly said that SAIC GM Wuling Automobile Co. will likely sell "significant numbers" of vehicles outside of China, though not under the Wuling brand because GM does not own the branding rights.

Almost two-thirds of GM sales were outside North America in the first half of the year. Reilly, former head of its Asian business, was chosen last month by Chief Executive Fritz Henderson to oversee all international business from headquarters in Shanghai, in part because of his track record in developing alliances.

1. Hm. Walmart sells a bicycle for about $60.
I hope the GM car is better than the Walmart bike.

11. maybe not, it just says that it will be "produced" in asia. Maybe they will import it.
They could produce a bare bones no frilles "to and from" car, but they won't do it.

Nissan is doing it with the Versa. The basic model starts at 9,900. If you want A/C (I do, I live in Austin), it goes up another grand.

with the cash for clunkers, that's a deal.

Going to look at one today.

4. I would buy one. To me, an automobile is a means to get from
point A to point B and back again. It's not an extension of my personality or anything else. Just a type of transportation that keeps me dry in the rain and warm in the cold.

8. Oh, you have a heater?
My heater is a heavy coat in the winter, my AC is rolling the windows down.

9. My son had the same philosophy in buying a super cheap Walmart bike prior to going to college.
Quit literally, the bolts and a few crucial components rusted off that bicycle in 6 weeks. It would have been more expensive to replace the components than the original cost of the bike.

I worry about $4000 cars becoming a liability.

14. Bettter to get a bike at a bike shop.
It'll cost more but you'll get a quality bike that's actually the right size for your height. When I bought mine a few years ago I learned that the tallest women's bike wasn't actually high enough to fit me. You wouldn't get that kind of service at Walmart.

15. It was a $60 lesson for a young kid. His next bike did, indeed, come from a bike shop.
The same shop where the repair guy told him that his Wally World bike was totally worthless. This is what the guy said when we asked if we could get anything at all on trade in for a new bike: "Um, no. Nothing. I'll set the bike behind the building and hope that someone steals it."

I think many people have this philosophy. Luckily with modern cars you can get 200k miles and 10+ years out of them assuming you do regular maintenance.

But I wouldn't buy a nano, because I doubt they would get that far. Buy a slightly used honda or toyota instead if you just want a low maintenance car that will last a while.

10. I was interested until they mentioned it'll be made in asia
im pretty sure you can build, ground up, a production car here for that much MSRP if you are willing to eat some abhorrent profits.

And yes, America has to give up it's love affair with the car, and the majority need to start buying something smaller, and more economical.

13. I'll believe it when I see it. The business model relies on people spending $50k on an Escalade/Taho
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 10:37 AM by Shagbark Hickory
And I don't think that will ever change.

And furthermore I don't think Tata vehicles will ever wash ashore here in the US as the feelings of penis inadequacies of car buyers in this country will interfere with common sense as it usually does forcing people to go with larger, more powerful and more expensive cars.

16. The kind some women carry in their purse?
What? A car?! I'll believe that when I see it.

FYI: I paid $1900 for my first new car.

Now, I'm going over here to have fuzzy memories about things that probably happened.

19. Will it explode like the Pinto?
That was due to forcing the car to come in under a budget cap.

I suppose people will see it as patriotic because it is GM even if it is assembled over seas and 'foreign' brand might be made here.

Nice to see them trying to produce some more sensible cars but I would personally steer well clear of a $4,000 GM. It seems to me they have enough quality issues when it comes to their $30,000 cars. I would hate to see the finish on a 4k one.
