Grace Slick
Grace Slick was on tv here (the news) yesterday. An interview with her (Plum) is available online.
I admire her simplicity, pragmatic approach, and mostly honesty. She is not caught up in all the worship whatever everybody else is worshiping at the moment thing, as are far too many others.

1. I think she's just great. Ever hear her story of going to Tricia Nixon'sbirthday party at the WH?

10. And she was accompanied by Abbie Hoffman...
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 11:00 AM by GReedDiamond
...they had considered trying to dose Tricky Dick with some acid, as the story goes.

Edited for spelling.

28. I recall that they were turned away because no escorts were invited but I just looked
at Wikipedia and they said they were turned away because WH personnel recognized them.

8. Do you think she would have changed the world, had she actually been allowed in and
put the LSD in Nixon's coffee? Can you just imagine?

4. She and Paul Kantner had a daughter, not a son, named "China"...
...the "god" thing never really happened, although it was fueled by Grace's own comments.

There is a good summary of the "god" story here:

6. My first remembrance of Grace Slick is when my brother said I had to hear this great
chick singer from San Francisco. She's with a group called The Jefferson Airplane. Well I did and I was hooked on her voice and the Airplanes music :)

13. Yes, she has apologized, and
especially for "We Built This City on Rock and Roll." In an interview shown on the Biography Channel a while back, she went on and on about how NO cities were ever built on rock and roll, and how stupid the song was and how much she'd always hated it.

14. Her story is fairly emblematic of her generation, in a lot of ways...
She shot her credibility for money. Now the money's gone, and she'd like her credibility back.

Doesn't work that way.

18. So, are you saying she still has money? Any child of the '80s will remember her for schlock rock
and little else. I'll always remember her as not quite as good as "Huey Lewis and the News".

22. Grace Slick has always had money
she was born into a "privileged" family FYI. She's far from broke and I've always been a fan of hers. No one has a voice like hers, no one.

26. Everybody sucked in the 80's.
Maybe none more than Starship, but remember the Stevie Wonder classic "Don't Drive Drunk?" It was especially bad if you were a prog rock fan like me, watching Yes and Genesis turn out such drivel. And members of King Crimson, Yes and ELP joining forces to form...Asia? Most culturally brain-dead decade ever.

9. I remember this moment well.
"On the Geraldo River show in New York I was asked, "what would you do, Grace, if you had the last ten years of your life to live over, how would it be different?" I said, "I'd have had blonde hair and big tits."

12. I love Grace,
but I must disagree with something she said a some time ago. She said that us old farts shouldn't be on stage playing rock and roll. So many people are getting better with age, Eric Clapton, David Gilmore, to name just two.

An example I can site is a few years ago I was lucky enough to get some comp passes to see Bo Diddly, one of his guitar players is a friend, and bought our old house. All though Bo was older and had a hard time getting around, when he sat down and started playing and singing, I heard a voice so pure, so clean, and so youthful that it stopped me in my tracks.

I wish Grace had continued singing.

24. ESKIMO BLUE DAY
ESKIMO BLUE DAY
(Slick/Kantner/Balin)

Snow cuts loose from the frozen
Until it joins with the african sea
In moving it changes its cold and its name
The reason I come and go is the same
Animal game for me
You call it rain
But the human name
Doesn't mean shit to a tree
If you don't mind heat in your river and
Fork tongue talking from me
Swim like an eel fantastic snake
Take my love when its free
Electric feel with me
You call it loud
But the human crowd
Doesn't mean shit to a tree
Change the strings and notes slide
Change the bridge and string shift down
Shift the notes and bride sings
Fire eating people
Rising toys of the sun
Energy dies without body warm
Icicles ruin your gun
Water my roots the natural thing
Natural spring to the sea
Sulfur springs make my body float
Like a ship made of logs from a tree
Redwoods talk to me
Say it plainly
The human name
Doesn't mean shit to a tree
Snow called water going violent
Damn the end of the stream
Too much cold in one place breaks
Thats why you might know what I mean
Consider how small you are
Compared to your scream
The human dream
Doesn't mean shit to a tree
*

It's on Volunteers but the versions I remember most 'fondly' (if that's the right word) were the performances at the Family Dog At The Beach I heard/saw forty summers ago.
I liked it when Grace did her hair up like Elsa Lancaster in Bride Of Frankenstein.
Grand political theater.

27. Thanks to all for your participation here.
White Rabbit was a great song, and it came at just the right time, but, Grace’s voice is so strong and powerful on it, truly a talented singer. A true great.
Today she paints. Fabulous stuff.
I think she has always had money, JA and JS were financially extremely successful, she may have had family money, but also I’m sure that fabulous artwork (paintings) makes a lot of money, particularly with her name on it.
But it also has a simple beauty to it.
She voices displeasure with “We Built this City”. And rightfully so, if anyone is honest at all.
In her honesty she describes herself as a commercial artist.
Yes. An extremely successful one, with music, then paintings.
Her appearance has changed so much. But she is still that down to earth, plain and simple person.
