Have you written your congressman or Senator?
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 10:46 AM by loyalkydem
I'm curious to know how many of you guys have written your congressman or Senator? Myself, I have written my Congressman John Yarmouth. I'm debating weather or not I want to write my Senator because he's already made it clear his position. Unfortunately, his name is Mitch McConnell. Would it make any difference if I attempt to write him or not.

Also, would you write your Senator or Congressman if he was a member of the Republican Party? I need some convincing.

To be clear. I wrote the White House and pleaded with them to support the Public Option. I also did the same thing with Congressman Yarmouth. In fact if the rumors are true that he's having a town hall this month, I plan on going to it because I want my voice heard.

1. My senators are Kyl and McCain...
I'm sure that I have never influenced either of them in the smallest amount, but on the other hand you can't lose by writing. I say write to them. They can't pretend that the people aren't telling them what they want.

2. Yes, and yes.
I wrote my representative, who's a Blue Dog, and both my senators, who are Republicans. I posted my letter to my rep here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8592013&mesg_id=8592013

I reworded it somewhat for the senators, of course.

I think everyone should do this. You never know when one letter, worded just the right way, will end up in the hands of someone who can make a difference. I've seen one letter make a HUGE difference, so it's always worth trying.

3. Just emailed the Whitehouse and Senators
Although I probably dont have to email Durbin.

I have a republican congressman? Should I bother? I don't think the public option will have a problem in the House.

7. I e-mailed Durbin
He did respond. He's looking for Bi-Partisanship. He also called off Townhall meetings. I wrote back that I DIDN"T vote for bi-partisanship, I want a public-option now!!!

5. My senators may be lost causes...
...but I wrote my congresscritter and the White House last night.

I'm thinking I ought to nudge the senators, too, however corrupt they are.

10. This is what I just sent to the President
I am angered that your staff and talking heads are messing up the Public Option. I have supported you guys and gave you my last 50.00 to help get you elected. It angers me that your dropping the public option for a CO-OP.

Co-Op is not what I help get democrats elected for. I'm asking you right now to get your act together. While you have my support, that support is not going to last, get your act together and make sure that a PUBLIC OPTION is on the table. Otherwise, you might find that some democrats may not be going back to Washington next year.

Listen to US and not the right wing CRAZY people showing up at these town hall meetings. Make the Republicans the party of obstruction, make them filler-buster everything and then you can go to the mid-terms and get the liberal democrats we want.

I'm trying to figure out what to say to Mitch McConnell.

12. nice Ky
I'm sure McConnell will give you the same "I'm worried about cost and deficits" crapola that Mel Martinez did me. Remind him BEFORE he gets the chance to give YOU that line how he and his fellow republicans had NO PROBLEM whatsoever in supporting Bush's war-OFF budget and the bank bailout from September.

11. Wrote a short letter to Bennett AND visited his office. Udall is next. I suppose Lamborn deserves
at least a call. That man is insufferable. My point for him is if you are against a public option (and he is against anything that might just might...possibly...hurt the downtrodden insurance executives) then you will be going after social security and medicare next.

Dick Armey pretty much admitted that on MTP with Rachel yesterday. I'm holding them all to that sentiment. Logically that's the only direction they can go. They will revive George's push for privatizing social security. Medicare, well, that would be turned over to the insurance giants, if they get their way. If we don't get a form of public option going now, the private sector will have a good shot at both programs sometime in the future when the GOP starts winning elections. And, they will. IMHO

14. A letter I just sent to McConnell
Mr. McConnell, it is with great despair that I write you. I'm disappointed you and your party will not be supporting the Public Option. I am a registered democrat who is blind in one eye.

I'm convinced without a shadow of a doubt that if I had healthcare under the Clinton administration, I would have never lost my eyesight. You may dismiss my words but I want you to listen very carefully to my request and do not dismiss my request because I'm a democrat. I want you to listen to me as if I'm a republican.

If you were in my shoes and you did not have health insurance and the doctor told you that you are going to loose your eyesight what would you want to do? Would you want to make sure that i got the coverage that I needed because it would save my eyesight or would you allow me to be a victim of the insurance companies who would deny me coverage because I have a pre-existing condition and yes sir Mr. McMconnell they will treat this as a pre-existing condition and deny me.

Now, knowing that, would you then be willing to compromise with the democratic party. I understand if at the end of the day you vote no, but please keep my story in mind when you do. Because I had no insurance, and for people who voted in favor of the insurance companies, I'm blind today. I'm angry at both parties and its time you remember that you went to Washington because of us.
